UN Human Rights Envoy Faces Mnangagwa

Douhan is expected to engage various stakeholders from the government to civil society, focusing on the impact of the sanctions.

The Special Rapporteur will present a report to the United Nations Human Rights Council during its 51st Session in September next year.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, Nick Mangwana confirmed Douhan’s expected visit to Zimbabwe on his Twitter page. He wrote:
Ms Elena Dohan, the UN Special Envoy for Human Rights will be in the country from tomorrow to assess the impact of illegal sanctions on Zimbabwe.
There is no question on the deleterious impact of Sanctions on this country. Let’s all speak with one voice on #ZimSanctionsMustGo.

The sanctions were imposed on the country nearly two decades ago and are renewed annually.
The Western countries accused the Zimbabwean government of egregious human rights violations and a breakdown in the rule of law.

Hichilema Plans To Redistribute Land

By A Correspondent- Zambia’s new President Hakainde Hichilema has hinted at embarking on land reform.

Land reform is understood as taking farms from white commercial farmers and giving it to black indigenous locals.

The same happened at Zambia’s neighbour, Zimbabwe, at the turn of the millennium.

Most of the white farmers chased away by the former Robert Mugabe administration during that time went to settle in Zambia.

Since then, Zimbabwe has been begging for food from Zambia, South Africa and other neighbouring countries.

Hichilema announced his planned land reform through his Twitter account at the weekend.

The fresh Zambian President said land reform would be the only answer to black economic empowerment.

“We cannot think of joint ventures if we don’t give Zambians land to use as leverage for negotiations with foreign capital. Land reforms is on my priority list,” he posted.

Mnangagwa Sponsoring Stone Age Hooliganism- President Chamisa

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance leader President Nelson Chamisa has said the Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa is sponsoring violence and acts of hooliganism.

Mwonzora Faces Removal.

Douglas Mwonzora

Senator Douglas Mwonzora faces removal as his MDC-T party begins its restructuring exercise in preparation for an elective congress this year.

Party spokesperson Witness Dube yesterday confirmed the restructuring exercise across provinces to fill vacant posts and ensure solid structures are in place ahead of the congress.

The congress is likely to result in a new-look party leadership following the December 2020 extraordinary congress that saw the election of Mwonzora as party president.

It was not immediately established whether Mwonzora will be challenged for the party leadership, which he won in controversial circumstances last year, characterised by violence and alleged vote rigging.

“We are doing gap fillings and we were in Matabeleland South yesterday (Saturday). Today, we are in Lupane. We are revamping our structures in readiness for the congress,” Dube said.

“We are filling gaps in the provincial structures after the Supreme Court judgment. There are people who have been working, but have not been confirmed by the organising department. We are formalising the interim structures now.”

Dube said the Bulawayo restructuring exercise was oversubscribed on Friday and could not take place as the numbers exceeded those required by the COVID-19 lockdown protocols and regulations.

“We had a challenge in Bulawayo as over 300 people showed up at the venue and that instantly gave us problems in terms of the COVID-19 protocols and guidelines. We had to call the meeting off,” he said.

Mwonzora emerged victorious in the party’s chaotic December congress that saw him contesting against Thokozani Khupe, Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi. Most leaders in the party’s standing committee were not elected. They were co-opted by the party leadership after last year’s extraordinary congress.- Newsday

Zanu PF Will Fall

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance vice chairperson Hon Job Sikhala says the Zanu PF regime has brought sanctions to the country through flagrant violation of human rights.

“It must be known to the pple of Zim that sanctions were brought in our country by ZANU PF, thru it’s human rights abuses, torture and murdering of its pple.

He added:

No matter what, ZANU PF will fall. The time for pple 2 revenge thru ballot is fast approaching.”

Hon Sikhala also scoffed at attempts by the regime to cause disharmony in the MDC Alliance by claiming he is harbouring presidential ambitions.

“ZANU PF dogs in their desperation force marched pple to carry placards reading Job Wiwa Sikhala for MDC President so as to build the narrative that their disruption of our President Adv Nelson Chamisa’s legitimate blitz selling our policies appears as internal conflict. Stupid!!!”

Chamisa: I Now Stay In Rurals

Opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday said he would now head to Manicaland province after his tour of Masvingo province last week turned violent and he was allegedly teargassed by the police and had his convoy attacked by suspected Zanu PF activists.
Chamisa told NewsDay that his party was putting more energy into interactions with rural people as there was a lot of developmental work which needed to be done in the villages after years of neglect by the Zanu PF government.

“I now stay in rural areas, I only visit Harare,” Chamisa said.

“I will be in another area this week because the challenges are in the rural areas. We have problems with water, infrastructure and a whole lot of issues, and that’s why at one point, we had a whole ministry dedicated to that. It’s only that they did not understand its importance.

“For one to understand rural problems, you have to stay with them (rural people), and I personally grew up in the village and that is where I am staying and am only visiting Harare so that I understand more of what needs to be done.”

Chamisa said there was need for rural areas to be developed so that they do not become centres of abuse by the “unpopular” to coerce the marginalised communities into supporting them.

He condemned the use of violence in rural areas, saying those engaging in such acts were aware that they were unwanted and unpopular.

“Violence is an instrument of the weak and losing. Nobody deploys violence in their strongholds, never. It’s a lie that Zanu PF has a rural stronghold, I have seen it,” Chamisa said.

“The relic (of Zanu PF) is terror, weaponisation of food aid and Zanu PF support programmes. That is their only life support. They have no organic connection with the masses, vakapiwa gupuro (they were divorced by the masses).”

Zanu PF boasts a strong rural support that has seen the party winning with huge margins, while the MDC Alliance has a strong visibility in urban areas.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has been campaigning vigorously to win the urban vote accusing the MDC Alliance of failing to provide service delivery to the people.

Zanu PF director for information Tafadzwa Mugwadi yesterday described Chamisa’s village trips as “provocative” and as “theatrics” that are only meant to get the attention of the United Nations special rapporteur on sanctions, Alena Douhan, who is expected to jet in today. –Newsday

Teachers Go For Strike

TEACHERS PROTEST AT MTHULI NCUBE’S OFFICE

ZIMBABWE Teachers Association (Zimta) members in Bulawayo have urged its leadership to call for strike action over poor salaries.

In a position paper dated October 14, 2021, addressed to the Zimta national leadership, the teachers said they had run out of patience with the government over false promises to improve their working conditions.

They demanded that, at least half of their salaries be paid in United States dollars.

Their complaints come as prices of basic goods and services have been on a sharp rise in recent weeks as the local currency continues to tank against major currencies.

Government has reacted by naming, shaming and arresting alleged currency fixers.

However, this has done little to stop price hikes.

Zimta Bulawayo provincial secretary Promise Keti called on the union leadership to provide a clear direction in response to their grievances related to “slave wages.”

“For the record, it is a fact that educators are incapacitated due to the current slave salaries being paid by the employer, and have run out of patience with the empty promises we have been getting. Educators can no longer afford a decent professional dress code as expected,” Keti said.

“Given the above concerns, we recommend to the national executive that Zimta must immediately declare a total withdrawal of labour by all its members until the government has addressed these grievances.

“As a condition for the resumption of duty, payment of salaries must be at least 50% US$ and the remainder in RTGS.

“No more pegging salaries on the interbank rate. Educators will not invigilate the coming examinations unless all these concerns have been addressed.”

Zimta chief executive Sifiso Ndlovu yesterday confirmed receipt of the position paper from the Bulawayo branch, but said the union was yet to meet to deliberate on the way forward.

“We will look at that position as a national leadership and subject it to a national consensus because we are representing members who are all over the country and we represent a diversity of interests and opinions in their own right.

“Once it’s deliberated on, then we will issue a co-ordinated response,” Ndlovu said. – Newsday

Tribute To Leonard Dembo

Remembering Leonard Dembo : @ 25 years in Death but entertaining the living

…. as Dembo family invites the nation for a tombstone unveiling on 23 October 2021

By Dr Tinashe Gumbo

The 9th of April 2021 marked 25 years after the demise of one of Zimbabwe’s finest and most influential music artists, Leonard Tazvivinga a.k.a Leonard Musorowenyoka Dembomavara who was called to be with our Lord on the same day in 1996. Leonard Dembo has remained a household name in Zimbabwe and beyond because of his music. His music continues to entertain, comfort, encourage and influence the people of all ages on economic, social and cultural issues.

For me, Dembo is in the rare class of the likes of Karl Marx, Karl Polanyi, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Steve Biko, James Kone and other philosophers whose philosophies and ideologies have continued to influence our economic, political, and social lives. You will underrate Dembo’s message at your own peril! Dembo music speaks to the heart, spirit, mind and flesh!

He was 37 years old when he died in 1996. To his multitude of fans, Dembo remains a source of inspiration for them. In my previous pieces on Leonard Dembo, I have already argued that music is a fundamental channel of communication: it provides a means by which people can share emotions, intentions, and meanings. Thus, Leonard’s music has continued to communicate key messages to people of all ages beyond his fans. His message was deep but full of advice to the audience. I continue to be in deep conversation with Dembo through his music. At times my wife Angela does not understand me when I enter my room, play a single Dembo song for the whole day, trying to make sense of what he is communicating. I have deep passion for Dembo music and I will not rest until I fully understand his history and philosophy. Let me not divert you reader from the focus of this piece, which is about remembering our hero, on 23 October 2021.

The Dembo family has planned to formally remember one of its greatest members. Indeed, Leonard put the family name on the international forum. This noble idea has received maximum support from the entire Barura Express family. Leonard’s children and the entire Dembo family have done so well as this event will consolidate all the Dembo networks. We should all emerge from Chaka more coordinated and motivated to do more to cultivate the Dembo legacy.

I have been following with keen interest the preparations for the tombstone unveiling for our music hero and have been motivated further to remain focused on Dembo legacy. The death of Mbuya Dembo and Leonard’s mother in law (Eunice’s Mother) within a month was a major setback to the preparations for this great event. Surely, it would have been good to have these two ladies present during this upcoming moment of remembrance of our hero-their son and son in law respectively (May their souls rest in peace).

Here we are Reader-on 23 October 2021, the Dembo fans will join the late musician’s family in remembering Leonard’s life formally. The event will be held at his rural home at Chaka Centre in Chirumanzu in the Midlands Province of Zimbabwe. This is a great moment for the Barura and Dembo families.

While Leonard belonged to the Dembo family as a husband to Eunice and a father to Morgen, Tendai and Fenny, he became a national and international figure in the music industry. One cannot attempt to monopolise Leonard and succeed. His influence lives on in the unending consequences that flow from his life and character. The Barura Express family members now feel strongly attached to this figure and this explains their continued call to authorities to consider awarding him some official hero status. Of course, that will just be an official move, as the Dembo fans themselves have already awarded him such because of his heroic life in the music industry.

The Chaka event will be punctuated with the official unveiling of Leonard’s tombstone, songs and dance as well as reflection sessions on the life, philosophy and message of the man who has been described by his fans as their hero. Indeed, for me personally, Dembo is my hero hence, I will do all in my capacity to support his philosophy and ideology which he expressed through his music.

When Leonard passed on, we surely felt that his death was premature. He left us when we thought he was at his best. As the Barura Express family, we were shocked and we felt exposed then. We struggled to accept this reality that he had gone but there was nothing we could do. Thus, 25 years later, we gather at Chaka, not to mourn, but to celebrate our Hero’s well lived life. This calls for everyone who has an attachment with Dembo, to join us as we commemorate 25 years of the passing on of our Music Icon.

Supporting this event comes in various ways. Physical attendance will be a strong message that one is part and parcel of the Barura Express family. However, I know that we cannot all be there in person due to other commitments of life beyond our control. Thus, a single cent will make a difference-I will share the official contacts of the Event Organisers (Nicolas and January) who will advise on how we can channel our support towards the event. Kindly note that ONLY these two are the official organisers of our event.

The Dembo fans will be reminded of the Barura Express hits during the event. The list here only applies to the Barura Express projects where earlier songs with the Outsiders are not accounted for here: “Amai Nevana Vavo “ (1984) (this can only be confirmed once the birth day of the group Barura Express itself is ascertained),“Nhamo Moto” (1986), “Kuziva Mbuya Huudzwa” (1987), “Sharai” (1987), “Kukura Kwedu” (1988), “Ruva Rashe” (1989), “Kukura Hakutani” (1990, which was a 12-inch disc-we called it an LP for long play), “Chitekete” (1991), “Tinokumbira Kurarama/Madhiri” (1992), “Mazano” (1993), “Kutinya Marimba” (1993), “Nzungu Ndamenya” (1994),“Pawpaw” (1994), “Shiri Yakangwara” (1995) and “Babamunini” (1996).

Salah Equals Drogba Record

Liverpool winger, Mohammed Salah Saturday scored his 104th Premier League goal to equal Didier Drogba’s long-standing record of many Premier League goals by an African player.

Mohamed Salah said that Didier Drogba implored him to break his Premier League goalscoring record.

Salah netted his 104th goal as Liverpool won 5-0 against Watford. Sadio Mané scored first in the 9th minute before Roberto Firmino doubled the lead in the 37th minute.

Firmino extended the lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute before Salah scored his two minutes later. Bobby sealed the victory with another goal at stoppage time.

Salah netted 32 goals in his first season at Liverpool after his move from Roma.

The Egyptian set a new benchmark for goals in a 38-game season, but also passed the 29-goal mark Drogba set for most goals by an African player in one campaign.

Speaking to the media in 2018, Salah said Drogba cheered him on as he set the new record. He told L’Equipe Magazine back then:
When I reached 20 goals, I spoke with Didier Drogba. He told me: ‘Please, break the record!’ to which I responded laughing: ‘No worries, I will!’

And I managed [it]. So I thought to myself, I have quite a few games to play before the end of the season, I can break the all-time record! It’s a great source of joy for me.

With 7 goals in the 2021/2022 season, Salah tops the scorers’ log.- Pindula News

Zanu PF Has Been Rejected By Citizens- President Chamisa

Tinashe Sambiri|MDC Alliance leader President Nelson Chamisa has dismissed the notion that Zanu PF has a strong support base in rural areas.

President Chamisa says he is now practically staying in the rural areas as the vibrant leader seeks to identify the needs and challenges of villagers across the country.

President Chamisa, quoted by NewsDay said:
“I now stay in rural areas, I only visit Harare

Doctors Reject Government Wifi Incentive

HEALTH professionals yesterday scoffed at government’s offer to stop mass resignations through the provision of non-monetary incentives such as WiFi and loans, saying their employer was focusing on trivialities which will not solve the brain drain problem dedevilling the health sector.

On Tuesday, during a post-Cabinet briefing, government said the country was experiencing massive brain drain in the health sector and would offer non-monetary incentives to abate the situation.

Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said an inter-ministerial committee identified measures to accelerate provision of non-monetary incentives such as staff accommodation, transport, vehicle loans, provision of meals and WiFi facilities.

Zimbabwe Senior Doctors Association president Shingai Nyaguse accused government of ignoring the salary issue, which he said was the real problem which was causing the brain drain.

“We remain concerned with suggestions that WiFi and canteens are incentives that will resolve the ongoing challenges,” Nyaguse tweeted on Thursday.

“The employer has been ignoring the elephants in the room, which includes issues of fair and commensurate remuneration, an enabling, conducive working environment and medical insurance for healthcare workers. The lack of consultative dialogue is glaring.”

Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enoch Dongo said: “It’s the employer’s responsibility to give Wi-Fi and canteen at workplaces as a courtesy, not allowance or incentive.

“The government offer was not supposed to be publicised since it’s their responsibly to do that. It is obvious the so-called incentive will not stop nurses from going outside the country whatsoever.”

Dongo said what health professionals want is a living wage and improvement of the working environment.

“Nurses do not take their children to school through WiFi or getting sadza at work,” Dongo said.

Doctors and nurses have gone on strike on several occasions since 2017 to pressure government to review their salaries, but their employer has been employing military tactics to force them back to work.- NewsDay

Strategies To Defeat Meningitis

Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) and partners launched the first ever global strategy to defeat meningitis – a debilitating disease that kills hundreds of thousands of people each year.

By 2030, the goals are to eliminate epidemics of bacterial meningitis – the most deadly form of the disease – and to reduce deaths by 70% and halve the number of cases. The organizations estimate that in total, the strategy could save more than 200,000 lives annually and significantly reduce disability caused by the disease.

This strategy, the Global Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis by 2030, was launched by a broad coalition of partners involved in meningitis prevention and control at a virtual event, hosted by WHO in Geneva. Its focus is on preventing infections and improving care and diagnosis for those affected.

“Wherever it occurs, meningitis can be deadly and debilitating; it strikes quickly, has serious health, economic and social consequences, and causes devastating outbreaks,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “It is time to tackle meningitis globally once and for all –by urgently expanding access to existing tools like vaccines, spearheading new research and innovation to prevent, detecting and treating the various causes of the disease, and improving rehabilitation for those affected.”

Meningitis is a dangerous inflammation of the membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord, predominantly caused by infection with bacteria and viruses.

Meningitis that is caused by bacterial infection tends to be the most serious – leading to around 250,000 deaths a year – and can cause fast-spreading epidemics. It kills 1 in 10 of those infected – mostly children and young people – and leaves 1 in 5 with long-lasting disability, such as seizures, hearing and vision loss, neurological damage, and cognitive impairment.

Over the last ten years, meningitis epidemics have occurred in all regions of the world, though most commonly in the ‘Meningitis Belt,’ which spans 26 countries across Sub-Saharan Africa. These epidemics are unpredictable, can severely disrupt health systems, and create poverty – generating catastrophic expenditures for households and communities.

“More than half a billion Africans are at risk of seasonal meningitis outbreaks but the disease has been off the radar for too long,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.

“This shift away from firefighting outbreaks to strategic response can’t come soon enough. This roadmap will help protect the health and lives of hundreds of thousands of families who every year fear this disease.”

Several vaccines protect against meningitis, including meningococcal, Haemophilus influenzae type b and pneumococcal vaccines. However, not all communities have access to these lifesaving vaccines, and many countries are yet to introduce them into their national programmes.

While research is underway to develop vaccines for other causes of meningitis, such as Group B Strep bacteria, there remains an urgent need for innovation, funding and research to develop more meningitis-preventive vaccines. Efforts are also needed to strengthen early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation for all those who need it after contracting the disease.

“This roadmap is the embodiment of the ambition of people and families affected around the world who have called for its creation.

It’s their experience and passion that has driven a whole community of interest to get this far,” said Vinny Smith, Chief Executive Officer of the Meningitis Research Foundation and the Confederation of Meningitis Organisations (CoMO), an international membership organization of patient advocacy groups for meningitis. “We celebrate together the common goal of defeating meningitis and will be led by their inspiration to make it happen.”

The new Roadmap details the following priorities for meningitis response and prevention:

Achievement of high immunization coverage, development of new affordable vaccines, and improved prevention strategies and outbreak response;
Speedy diagnosis and optimal treatment for patients;
Good data to guide prevention and control efforts;

“The Global Roadmap to Defeat Meningitis demonstrates what can be accomplished when a global need is met with global action,” said Nikolaj Gilbert, President and CEO of PATH. “Progress against meningitis has lagged for too long; by working together, we can overcome the disease that has cost so many lives in countries around the world. PATH is proud to have been a part of the roadmap’s development and is committed to advancing affordable and equitable vaccine solutions to defeat meningitis.”

“We must be united in our efforts to end all preventable childhood diseases, including bacterial meningitis,” said Dr. Aboubacar Kampo, Director of Health Programmes at UNICEF. “UNICEF has been supporting governments for decades, facilitating the delivery of life-saving meningitis vaccines. Still, far too many children are succumbing to this and other preventable diseases – and the situation is only worsening as a result of the pandemic.

We need to act decisively to strengthen primary health care and get routine immunization back on track, before more children face adverse health outcomes – or loss of life – inflicted by meningitis and other preventable infectious diseases.”

“Although the main burden of meningitis is in poor countries, acute bacterial meningitis is a global problem with no country being spared its devastating impact,” said Professor Sir Brian Greenwood, Professor of Clinical Tropical Medicine at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and co-chair of the Task Force supporting the implementation of the roadmap. “Thus, containing this serious group of infections needs a global response. This is what the roadmap sets out to achieve, bringing together – under the umbrella of WHO – health professionals from across the world to bring this condition under control by 2030.”

“The Meningitis Roadmap provides a clear blueprint for defeating this devastating disease,” said Professor Robert Heyderman, Head of the Research Department of Infection at University College London. “Crucially it identifies the gaps in our knowledge and the tools required. To achieve the Road Map’s ambitious goals, a team approach will bring together countries, global policymakers, civil society, funders, researchers, public health specialists, healthcare workers and industry to generate and implement innovative new strategies.

Teachers Urged To “Defy” Gvt Order

By A Correspondent- The Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) has advised teachers who are yet to be vaccinated against the coronavirus to report for duty on Monday (tomorrow), as usual.

In a statement, PTUZ president Takavafira Zhou said teachers should not listen to “unsubstantiated utterances” by some government officials that those who have not received COVID-19 vaccines will be barred from their workplaces on Monday.

Said Zhou

We have read in the press and from unsubstantiated utterances by government officials that non vaccinated civil servants must stop reporting for work forthwith.

As PTUZ we encourage teachers to be vaccinated but by no means should such encouragement be misconstrued for mandatory vaccination, but voluntary vaccination.

The quandary over the issue of vaccination is that there was never an engagement between government as employer and civil servants representatives (employees), particularly teacher unions. The order is therefore a unilateral declaration by the government.

He said according to standard operational procedures, education officials should communicate directly with the unvaccinated teachers and order them to stop coming to work. Added Zhou:

In terms of standard operational procedures, unvaccinated teachers must continue to report for work until they receive communiques specifically in their names informing them to stop coming for work. Verbal instructions from school heads are invalid.

Zhou, who is also a senior MDC Alliance official, said school heads should compile lists of all unvaccinated teachers at their respective schools, capture the reasons for non-vaccination and send them to districts for onward conveyance to province, Head Office and the Public Service Commission (PSC) and wait for formal instructions from these respectable offices.

The deadline for civil servants to get vaccinated lapsed last Friday with indications that the government would terminate contracts of those that have not been fully vaccinated.

Public Service Minister Paul Mavima said civil servants with genuine reasons for not being vaccinated will be given time to get jabbed.

Health Ministry Secretary, Jasper Chimedza, said that unvaccinated civil servants would be sacked as per some provisions of Statutory Instrument 234 of 2021.-statemedia

#BREAKING- ANOTHER ZIM TEACHER AT IT AGAIN

By Simba Chikanza | Another Zimbabwean teacher has been investigated after assaulting a male student at St Benedict’s High School in Mash East.

“Tapotsa taurayirwa mwana at this school,” the abused lad’s father tells ZimEye. https://www.facebook.com/plugins/video.php?height=314&href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FZimEye%2Fvideos%2F569131027537087%2F&show_text=false&width=560&t=0

The teacher, a Mr Manjoro, has to date been recorded apologising over the abuse.

As ZimEye interviews the teacher, on Sunday morning, below is the father’s unedited report authored in Shona:

Zimbabwean teachers vajaira kurova vana zvisina tsarukano. The child in question is my son in Form 6. The headmaster, senior teacher and another teacher came into their dormitory at night android found some students using laptops & cellphones; my son is a prefect, but at that time he was already fast asleep. Laptop computers are allowed at the school for Form 6 students, but they are not allowed in the dorms. The senior teacher beat my son by hands, choking his throat and threw him onto the bed, thereby hitting by neck on the metal base of the bed.

They searched him and found out that he had no cellphone or laptop. His fault was that he is prefect. They were saying he should have reported the use of the electronic devices. How could he do that; he was sleeping? To make matters worse, the school didn’t notify me or the mother of this incident from that Wednesday, 13/10/2021 till Saturday, 16/10/2021 nor did they take the boy for medical attention. I only came to know about the case on Saturday through other people who have links at the school. I had to phone the school and that’s when they started to apologise to me. The boy was only taken for medical attention after I asked them why they haven’t taken him for medical examination. I know children can be mischievous and may need to be spanked on their backs, hands or legs by a sjambok. Using open hands or fists is unacceptable. In this incident, many other children were also beaten.

Leonard Musorowenyoka Dembo Remembered

Health Professionals Reject Gvt Wifi

Zanu Pf Stalwart Spits Blood After Being Punched By Colleague

By A Correspondent- Zvimba East Member of Parliament, Tawanda Tungamirai punched and verbally assaulted a fellow Zanu PF youth member Saturday just before the party’s decisive meeting to pass a resolution to hold district elections.

The incident occurred at Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) grounds as party members converged for a provincial coordinating committee (PCC) meeting to give the green light to the conduct of polls, which had been put on ice to pave way for the completion of a restructuring exercise.
poster

Tungamirai assaulted Wonder Hutepasi from Banket in Zvimba South for allegedly denigrating him on social media, including a party WhatsApp group.

Tungamirai is the son of late national hero and former Air Force of Zimbabwe Air Chief Marshal Josiah Tungamirai.

This journalist witnessed the drama unfold as the temperamental lawmaker emerged from his Toyota Fortuner and confronted Hutepasi threatening to beat him up or hire thugs to “finish you off.”

The MP used vul_gar language as he unleashed his diatribe against a visibly shocked Hutepasi, who stood motionless among a small group of fellow party youths.

As if that was not enough, Tungamirai dragged by the hand a hapless Hutepasi closer to his vehicle in order to isolate him from the crowd and took the opportunity to punch him using a clenched fist once on the mouth.

Hutepasi only had deputy provincial commissar Nigel Murambiwa to thank who sprang to his defence when Tungamirai, who was shouting unprintable insults and poking his victim, was evidently not done yet.

Hutepasi later told a nlocal publication he spat blood following the assault by Tungamirai.

“I sustained a cut inside my mouth which was oozing out blood, l was spitting blood. I am shocked why he beat me up. This is dishonourable conduct by an MP,” said Hutepasi, adding senior party leaders counselled him against making a police report.

The violence happened in front of two Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) intelligence officers.

According to sources, Tungamirai was recently assigned by the party to verify grassroots structures in Zvimba South, where he reportedly raised a red flag over the eligibility of some listed members who are in Hutepasi’s faction.

This invited a backlash from the garrulous Hutepasi on Zanu PF social media platforms alleging Tungamirai was working with Zvimba district coordinating committee (DCC) chairman, Bywell Mbirimi to decimate their camp.

Mashonaland West grassroots structures were in shambles, a development that forced the postponement of internal elections to choose district leaders.

There are reports lists of relief food aid beneficiaries, non-members, expelled cadres, and uncleared returnees that were presented to the commissariat as bona-fide Zanu PF members.

This saw a delay in the holding of district elections scheduled for September.

District members constitute the Electoral College to choose provincial committee members, including the chairperson.

Contestants eyeing the chairman post are reportedly financing the “rigging” of structures, where names of ineligible cadres appeared on provisional lists recently submitted to the Commissariat department for vetting.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs minister Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, Information deputy minister Kindness Paradza, acting Zanu PF provincial chairperson Abiel Mujeri and provincial Youth League chair Vengi Musengi are set to contest the impending provincial chairperson elections to replace Ziyambi, who was in June elevated to the Politburo.

Meanwhile, factional violence in Zanu PF has turned physical in the Midlands province, with senior officials exchanging blows in public last weekend in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s troubled citadel.

Preparations for the party’s congress next year, which are preceded by restructuring and elections from grassroots level, have been problematic and marred with intimidation and violence as a faction aligned to State Security minister Owen “Mudha” Ncube and incumbent chairman Daniel Mackenzie Ncube battle for party leadership.

Both factions claim loyalty to Mnangagwa.

Zanu PF Gweru district secretary for adminstration Slemani Kwidini was allegedly “heavily assaulted” by central committee member Wellington Magura at a restaurant in the Midlands capital on Saturday.

Kwidini is rallying behind Mudha Ncube while Magura is in the faction backing Mackenzie Ncube.

The matter has since been reported at Gweru Central Police station under CR number 88/10/2021 although none of the people involved are yet to appear in court.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko would neither deny nor confirm receiving such a report, saying police usually issue Press releases on fresh cases.

“Usually we issue Press releases when it is sought on fresh cases. For old stories we encourage journalists to take stories from the courts. There will obviously be (new) developments from the time of the reports,” Mahoko said.

Further investigations by this publication however showed that the matter is not yet before the courts.

ontacted for comment, Kwidini confirmed reporting the alleged assault at Gweru Central Police station.

The fist fight occurred at Milan entertainment joint.

Magura did not respond to questions sent to him via WhatsApp, although the messages had been delivered to his mobile number.

But two letters signed by two Milan directors, one Richard Murombedzi and Taleeb Mohamed and addressed to provincial party chairperson Mckenzie Ncube and Kwidini respectively, revealed the banning for three months of those involved in the scuffle at the restaurant.

“l look forward to meeting and demonstrating actions that took place that night (last weekend) with party officials that were witness to these events. Attached is our official letter barring from entry party cadres (involved in the scuffle),” part of the letter addressed to Ncube read.

Mackenzie Ncube, however, did not respond to enquires sent to him over the matter.

A letter sent to Kwidini reads:

“This has left us with no option but to inform you as an individual and your accomplices Mr Dominic and Mr Jassi. We do not condone such behaviour totally and your friends as such are not welcome on these premises for a period of three months. We feel the actions of this group have self-interests totally against the HE (Mnangagwa) mantra of Vision 2030, which we support,” the Milan management officials wrote.

According to party officials, Mackenzie Ncube has the backing of minister in the President’s office Joram Gumbo while Mudha Ncube’s allies include prominent figures like Local Government minister July Moyo.

“These fights are largely sparked by factional struggles,” a party insider said.

Abortion Tragedy For Kadoma Woman

Talent Makechemu

By A Correspondent- A second attempt to abort a three-month-old preg_nancy turned fatal for a Kadoma woman.

The tragic incident happened on Wednesday morning.

Talent Makechemu, 24, of Munhumutapa died after visiting Mai Constance of Ndiweni Street for a backyard ab0rtion.

It is believed she died after taking a bleaching solution that was alleged to have been induced by Mai Constance to terminate the preg_nancy.

When H-Metro arrived at the backyard “clinic” along Ndiweni Street, scores of Rimuka and Munhumutapa residents had converged at the house to catch a glimpse of Talent’s lifeless body.

She was lying face down in a room used by Mai Constance.

It emerged that Talent had been vomiting while three bottles of a bleaching solution were seen in the room.

Some of the neighbours said they had been seeing Talent visiting Mai Constance’s “clinic” on numerous occasions.

Mai Constance is well known in the neighbourhood to be providing ab0rtion services.

“I’ve been seeing the girl from Munhumutapa coming to see Mai Constance on numerous occasions and I suspected that she was coming to the clinic.

“Mai Constance has a history of conducting preg_nancy terminations in her room and I don’t know what happened in that room. I later heard the news that the girl from Munhumutapa had died after some complications during the abortion process,” said one neighbour.

Another neighbour said four fetuses had once been found dumped in the area.

“The area had witnessed four dead fetuses being found around and most residents around this place know that Mai Constance was running an illegal backyard ab0rtion clinic charging US$20 but no-one had the guts to report her to the police,” said another neighbour

A friend to Talent said her late friend had terminated another preg_nancy previously.

“Talent was my friend. Early this year she terminated a two-month-old preg_nancy but I do not know what happened today.

“I just heard that she died at a house along Ndiweni street during another attempt to abort another preg_nancy.

“I am shocked with the news of death; it could have been better if she had given birth to the child than to die,” said the friend.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (Rimuka) attended the scene and took the body to Kadoma General Hospital mortuary.

Hubby Stabs Wife’s Lover Over Text Message

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is looking for Laurey Tafirei from Chivi who stabbed his wife’s lover to death over a love message on his wife’s phone.

The police said Tafirei used his wife’s phone to lure the deceased to a secluded place where he stabbed him.

“The ZRP is investigating a case of murder which occurred in Madungwe Village, Chivi on 15/10/21, where a Laurey Tafirei (25) stabbed his wife’s boyfriend (36) after seeing a love message on his spouse’s cellphone.

The suspect chatted using the wife’s cellphone inviting the unwary victim to a secluded place near a borehole and stabbed him on the back and chest.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who is said to have disappeared after committing the offence.” – Pindula News

Village Head In Soup Over Shrine

By A Correspondent- A Domboshava village head has been arraigned before the courts for allegedly trying to invade an apostolic sect shrine, which he wants to subdivide and sell as residential stands.

Wiriranayi Gwindi has been dragged to the Supreme Court by the Johanne Masowe Chishanu Esikiti, who claim that the shrine was given to them in 1988. They  accuse the village head of trying to benefit from the land which does not belong to him.

The apostolic sect that boasts of around 5 000 worshippers is being represented by its leader Anyplay Chasi who claims that they have been worshipping at the shrine for more than three decades before Gwindi claimed that the land was his.

The matter is set to be heard in the Supreme Court under SC261/20 after both parties failed to accept the outcomes of the magistrates and High Court judgements.

In their appeal of the judgement  handed down by Justice Esther Muremba, dated May 21, the apostolic sect leaders claimed that Gwindi had no right to claim that the worshipping place belongs to him.

“The court a quo erred by failing to consider that the respondent did not establish any rights in relation to the land in question and, therefore, there was no basis to make a ruling against the appellants who proved their rights in that they were given the land in question by Augustine Chaitezvi in 1986, which position was confirmed by the then chief Chinamhora on the 7th of April 1988,” argued the sect.

“The court a quo erred by confirming a finding by the magistrates court to the effect that the respondent (Gwindi) is the owner of the five pieces of land or contour ridges which is contradictory to another finding by the magistrates court that the land belong to Chaitezvi family.”

According to the letter dated April 7, 1988, attached to the court documents signed by the ward council identified as Gahadza and headman Alfred Gwindi, the apostolic sect was confirmed to be the occupiers of the 2ha piece of land.

“We have agreed that these can worship here since the law doesn’t allow people to gather everywhere.

“They have agreed that they will use one place. We urge the parties to be peaceful since these are people who approached us with a request,” read the letter.

The matter was also brought before chief Chinamhora.

Domboshava has become a hunting ground for home-seekers following reports that traditional leaders are selling out prime land at cheap prices.-standard

Blow For Buyanga

By A Correspondent- Prominent businessman Frank Buyanga has suffered a huge blow after the Supreme Court dismissed his appeal against a High Court ruling ordering him to return his six-year-old son to his estranged girlfriend.

Supreme Court judges Justices Elizabeth Gwaunza, Hlekani Mwayera and Thomas Masuku dismissed Buyanga’s case, accusing him of approaching the courts with dirty hands.

Lawyer Choice Damiso, who was instructed to represent Buyanga’s former girlfriend Chantelle Muteswa by Women and Law in Southern Africa (WLSA), said the court, as the upper guardian of all minor children, expressed concern that Buyanga had separated the boy from his mother for the past 18 months.

WLSA is an organisation that works to ensure that the law works for women.

“The court dismissed the appeal and said it would not hear the matter at all because Buyanga, by illegally removing the child from Zimbabwe, had approached the court with dirty hands,” Damiso said.

“That is to say that a person who is in continuing wilful violation of a court order cannot have the audacity to approach the court for a favourable judgement.

“He must first of all purge his violation and approach the court with clean hands.

“This is a universal legal principle applied in courts all over the world. It is actually based on common sense and rules of fair play.”

Muteswa, as the mother of the minor child, was sometime back granted sole custody of the child, with Buyanga having rights of access.

After some litigation between the parties, High Court judge Justice Jacob Manzunzu in June 2019 ruled in an urgent chamber application that Buyanga should not remove the child from Zimbabwe until the matter had been determined.

This was after Muteswa had approached the High Court challenging a ruling by the lower court that had granted Buyanga the right to take the child out of the country.

In violation of this court order, on March 26, 2020, Buyanga took the child to South Africa without the consent of either Muteswa or the court.

This forced Muteswa to approach the court again.

Manzunzu gave another order compelling the businessman to return the child within 24 hours or face contempt of court charges.

It was later discovered that Buyanga had used a “fake” order to gain access to the child’s passport that had been left in the custody of the registrar of courts.

Immigration records also showed that the child had been taken in and out of the country about six times.

After failing to return the child to the mother, Buyanga was put on the Interpol wanted list for violating a court order.

He appealed against Manzunzu’s ruling, but his case was dismissed by the Supreme Court last week.

“Citizens should know that the justice system is not a playground for bullies and judgments of courts are there to be obeyed and not played with,” Daniso said.-standard

Cop Runs Over 9yr, Attempts To Flee Scene

By A Correspondent- Villagers in Dete, Hwange, have appealed to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure Development to erect visible traffic signs to control vehicles as well as the construction of speed humps at a “black spot” in the area where several people have been killed by speeding vehicles.

This comes after a police officer driving one of the newly commissioned service vehicles ran over and killed a 9-year-old Grade 3 female pupil before attempting to flee the scene on Friday.

According to CITE, the incident happened at around 7 am as school children made their way to Ndangababi primary school from various villages.

The vehicle was part of a new fleet bought by the government for law enforcement and was destined for use by Dete police station.

Villagers who witnessed the accident said the speeding police vehicle was on its way from Hwange and the driver failed to see the deceased who was crossing the road.

Ward councillor, Cosmas Mwakiposa, said the villagers were deeply saddened by the incident which they say could have been avoided had the police officer been cautious. He said:

The community is angry and are complaining because this has been happening for some years without any action from the government.

What angered them the most is that such things could have been avoided had motorists exercised caution when passing through busy places such as this.

As the councillor l am appealing to authorities to put zebra crossing marks at areas where school children cross so extra caution is taken.

Mwakiposa said to date over 30 people including children had been killed while crossing the road at Cross Dete. He added:

The Ministry of Transport should act by setting up traffic signage and introduce speed humps to curb these accidents.

The number of people killed is frightening and we are surprised why authorities have not acted.

Last month a man was killed after being run over by a haulage truck as he attempted to cross the road.

Two years earlier a grade 4 learner was crushed to death by a haulage truck while her friend survived by a whisker as they made their way to school.

National spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the death, saying investigations into circumstances surrounding the incident were underway but said the police officer was not hurt.

Fish Poacher Shot By Rangers Acquitted

By A Correspondent- A Victoria Falls magistrate has acquitted a fish poacher who was shot and injured by Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) rangers in Hwange.

The rangers claimed that Claudius Mhlanga (47) tried to attack them with a kitchen knife during the encounter which occurred on 12 September along the Deka River in the Siankali area.

Victoria Falls resident magistrate Lindiwe Maphosa acquitted Mhlanga this week after a full trial with the court ruling that the two Zimparks rangers that testified gave contradictory accounts of the incident.

In the first count, he was accused of unlawfully using fishing nets and fishing rods to catch fish without a permit.

The second charge related to accusations that he charged towards one of the rangers, Prosper Muleya, who was armed with an AK47 rifle, with a kitchen knife intending to stab him and the third charge was for possession of 50 grammes of cyanide poison.

During cross-examination by Prosecutor Arthur Chindedza, Muleya and his colleague were quizzed about how Mhlanga was shot and the circumstances leading to the discovery of the cyanide.

In her ruling, Maphosa said the state witnesses failed to give consistent accounts of what transpired during Mhlanga’s arrest. Said Maphosa:

The evidence led by the state with regards to count two is incredible and cannot be believed by this court.

The description of the two state witnesses that one man armed with a kitchen knife was advancing towards one of them to attack could actually qualify as an episode in an extremely fictitious movie or a comedy.

The evidence of the state witness in this regard is not true and inconsistent with the injuries sustained by the accused.

The accused’s version is reasonably possible when he says he tried to run, but he was shot when he tried to stop as he was shivering, he lifted his hands in surrender.

I find it that at no point did the accused resist arrest and if he had been advancing with a knife in his right hand then the injury would definitely not be at the back of the hand protruding to the palm.

There are consistent descriptions of the accused, which say he was surrendering with his hands up and was shot from behind and the bullet perforated to the inside, therefore, that charge falls away.

On possession of cyanide, Maphosa said she believed Mhlanga’s account.

Mhlanga had denied possessing cyanide, arguing the poison was planted in his bag by the rangers as he was only shown the substance at the Matetsi police base after he threatened to sue. The magistrate ruled:

I will believe the version by the accused person, which need not be true but reasonably true because the first witness in this evidence seemed to want to distance himself from answering until the prosecutor had to stop him from his meandering answer.

This court confidently proves that the state cannot prove this charge beyond a reasonable doubt, therefore, the accused is found not guilty and acquitted.

Mhlanga was, however, found guilty in the first count and he was handed a fine of $10 000 or three months imprisonment if he does not pay by November 1.

The other three months were set aside for five years on the condition that he does not commit any similar offence.

Maphosa ordered that Mhlanga must be given back his knife while the fish and cyanide were forfeited to the state.

Hackers Wipe NUST Computer Data-Base

By A Correspondent- Hackers have attacked the National University of Science and Technology (NUST) computer system and deleted students’ results and the institution’s payment history.

The university also said that the malware also made the student portal inaccessible to many other students.

The malware attack at NUST has left many students and lecturers in a lurch as ICT experts at the institution have so far been unable to fix the system.

A third-year student at the institution told The Chronicle that the university was working on resolving the situation, adding that the incident had a massive effect on students supposed to be going for attachment since NUST set deadlines for securing internships.
Another student expressed concern about the missing results, saying if the online system is not fixed, students will be forced to retake courses they have done already. Said the student:
I pray that our results will not change when the system is restored. When I managed to open my portal two days ago the results of my supplemented courses were no longer there.
I hope that can be resolved because if not I will have to re-register and re-write the same course again next year because special exams for final students this year have been written. It is my hope that the payment history does not get interrupted.

The university said that it is working flat out on rectifying the issue and fixing the online system, Navision. The institution added that mass registration for students and cleaning up exercise of their portals is underway. Said the institution:
To ensure a successful graduation ceremony and smooth running of blended teaching and learning, the university has moved to the old system of processing students’ results.
The university urged students to exercise patience adding that it will be updating students about progress through the university website.

Mnangagwa Loses Power

By A Correspondent- The ongoing Zanu PF intra-party violence is clear evidence that President Emmerson Mnangagwa has lost control of the party.

The chaos has rocked all the provinces as warring factions in the former liberation movement are battling to secure influential positions in the provinces to ensure control of key party structures.

The infighting has been reported in Mashonaland West, Masvingo, Manicaland and Bulawayo, among other provinces.

Sources close to the developments told Zimbabwe Independent on Wednesday that aspiring candidates for the Mashonaland West chairperson position were battling to control lower structures, which constitute the Electoral College to choose provincial committee members.

Top Zanu PF provincial members eyeing the chairperson post are reportedly financing the “rigging” of structures, where names of non-members and expelled cadres have appeared on provisional lists recently submitted to the commissariat department for vetting.

Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs minister Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, Information deputy minister Kindness Paradza, acting Zanu PF provincial chairperson Abiel Mujeri and provincial youth league chairperson Vengi Musengi are vying for the provincial chairperson position to replace Ziyambi Ziyambi, who was elevated to the politburo in June this year.

Mujeri confirmed that all was not well.

“The reasons why the decision was made to restructure branches are just many. The basket system had not been observed in some instances,” he said.

“There were some people who contested as independent candidates in previous elections and still have pending matters while some had defected to other political parties. Those tasked with restructuring were not aware that such cadres were not eligible for any posts until their disciplinary cases were finalised.

“There were some areas where names of provincial and district committee members were sneaked onto lists when these people were ineligible. For instance, if one is in the provincial structure or district, they cannot go back and be part of lower rungs of the party.

“So all these were being fixed and we expect districts to start submitting the revised lists to the provincial office on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, so that on Sunday we convene the provincial coordinating committee (PCC) meeting to instruct members to go and hold elections to choose districts,” Mujeri added.

A meeting held in Chinhoyi a fortnight ago, in accordance with Article 12 of the Zanu PF constitution, turned the PCC into an elections directorate which resolved to postpone internal polls until finalisation of the ongoing restructuring of districts that were fraught with “ghost members”.

During the heated meeting, Ziyambi took aim at alleged G40 members, who he accused of strategically positioning themselves for influential posts in districts.

“l gather money is exchanging hands. We have received a report, the majority of G40 people decided to stay in Zanu PF and fund provincial members so that those who were dormant take positions then challenge the president (Emmerson Mnangagwa),” he said.

Ziyambi added that: “We want genuine cadres of Zanu PF to be on the lookout for these fake people and expose them.

“It’s better to delay completion of restructuring processes as we ensure that we build a firm foundation.

“We can always ask (acting national political commissar Patrick) Chinamasa to give us more time to build our structures, which will make us victorious in the 2023 elections.”

The turmoil has forced the ruling party to suspend district and provincial elections.

Chamisa Belittles Mnangagwa; Hero Worships Mugabe

By A Correspondent- MDC-Alliance President Nelson Chamisa said the late former President Robert Mugabe had better election-winning tactics than Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Chamisa said Mnangagwa was nothing like the late statesman Robert Mugabe and that he would “beat him” if a snap election was called today.

He said Mugabe at least had a bag of tricks at his disposal to win people over, but Mnangagwa wasn’t in the same league.

“That brother of mine who likes wearing a scarf [Mnangagwa], I can beat him [electorally] in broad daylight. Mugabe would at least confuse people with English, but this one, he can’t. He also can’t read, he has no vision. He’s unpopular, he has no friends,” he said.

Another Zim Teacher Nearly Kills Student

By Simba Chikanza | Another Zimbabwean teacher has been investigated after assaulting a male student at St Benedict’s High School in Mash East.

“Tapotsa taurayirwa mwana at this school,” the abused lad’s father tells ZimEye.

Correct Position on Non Vaccinated Teachers: To Report or Not to Report for Work?

By Dr Takavafira M. Zhou | We have read in the press and from unsubstantiated utterances by gvt officials that non vaccinated civil servants must stop reporting for work forthwith. As Ptuz we encourage teachers to be vaccinated but by no means should such encouragement be misconstrued for mandatory vaccination, but voluntary vaccination.

The quandary over the issue of vaccination is that there was never an engagement between gvt as employer and civil servants representatives (employees), particularly teacher unions. The order is therefore a unilateral declaration by gvt.

teachers’ strike

We however advice teachers that it is unprocedural for them to stop going to work on the basis of generic communication that has no specific names. In terms of standard operational procedures unvaccinated teachers must continue to report for work until they receive communiques specifically in their names informing them to stop coming for work. Verbal instructions from school heads are invalid. We however encourage school heads to compile lists of all unvaccinated teachers at their respective schools, and indicate reasons for non vaccination and send to districts for onward conveyance to province, Head Office and PSC and wait for formal instructions from these respectable offices. Verbal instructions are legally void in the Public Service and we hope there would be written communiques to teachers in the respective schools taking cognisant of reasons proffered for non-vaccination.

It is our hope that the issue of non- vaccination would not be used to settle old scores in schools. Every case must be determined on its merit and we encourage administrators, education officials and PSC to navigate this quandary in a professional manner, never mind it’s one armed banditry origin.

Still Born Baby Detained In Mortuary For A Month As Mission Hospital Demand Payment

St Patrick’s Mission Hospital in Hwange has come under spotlight after management at the Catholic run health institution allegedly detained a still born for a month in the mortuary, demanding that the distraught parents raise mortuary fees.

It was only after the father of the child gave his refrigerator to the hospital that the body was released for burial.

At the centre of the storm is the hospital’s health service administrator Sister Rumbidzai Maverutse, with staff and community members served by the 72-bed Catholic-run health institution not happy with her management style.

Furthermore, despite the fact that the institution is part of the Civil Protection Unit, ambulances from St Patrick’s Hospital do not attend to any cases without payment upfront, sources said.

Workers  told Sunday News that this was not an isolated incident.

“Even villagers now know her. Even in the latest incident who knows the value of the refrigerator but what she tells people is that if your relative dies you pay US$5 per day.

The head doctor and the pharmacist have tried to seek audience with the Bishop to tell him what is happening here,” said a worker at the institution.Sunday News caught up with the father of the still born that was detained at the institution.

Mr Thomas Mukuli said he had found his child’s body “dumped in a tray” when he went to the hospital for a visit after hearing that his wife had suffered some complications during child birth.

“My wife was admitted to the institution when she was supposed to give birth. I was called and told that the baby was stillborn. When I got there, I was told that my wife had been transferred to Bulawayo because she couldn’t even talk.

“But what shocked me the most was that when I arrived, they had not put the body in the mortuary but they left it on a tray. I then asked them to at least put the body in the mortuary so I could rush to see my wife in Bulawayo.

“At the time, they said there was no charge for that. When I returned from Bulawayo and asked for the body, the sister said I should pay because the body was in the mortuary for days and electricity was not for free,” he said.

Mr Mukuli said Sister Maverutse only agreed to release the body after he offered to compensate the hospital with his refrigerator.

“They asked me to pay US$450 for everything including my wife’s medication. They subtracted US$200 and I was asked to pay the rest but I did not have money at the time.

“So, I waited and the body was in the mortuary for at least a month.I was then asked if I had any livestock and I said I did, but my rural home was a bit too far. So, I was told to list all the property I had and they chose the fridge. I actually switched it off for five days waiting for them to come and get it. I switched it back on but three days later they came to take it. When they took my fridge, it still had ice. They used an ambulance to come and get it. I only learnt later, as a person who does not know the law, that expecting mothers are not supposed to pay,” he said.

A general hand at the hospital, Mr Joseph Ncube, said at one point he went for 18 months without pay as Sister Maverutse froze her pay for unspecified reasons. When he was eventually paid, he said, the money had lost its value.

“All in all, I went for one and half years without getting paid because she had frozen my salary. At first, she did some consultations and when she asked around, senior doctors told her that she could not unilaterally freeze my salary. She went and asked the provincial leadership about the same issue and they also told her the same thing. Yet she still went ahead and suspended my pay and this went on for 18 months. In the end, I was compensated for the months I had gone without pay and I was eventually given my money. The only problem is that it had lost value because of inflation and I had accumulated debts that put me in a difficult position. I’m still at St Patrick’s but I’m seeking a transfer away from here,” he said.

A former senior worker at the hospital (name withheld) reportedly quit as they clashed with Sister Maverutse.

“I eventually left the institution because it was impossible to work with her,” the former worker said.

The worker also alleged that  community members were shocked by the behaviour of Sister Maverutse, a Catholic nun, as she had run the institution with an iron fist ever since she joined in 2013.

“The community has not benefitted from the things they were meant to benefit from in a long time. I get calls from people in the community who say they are not getting any aid even from donors anymore. Someone has to explain what is going on at the hospital.”

Sister Maverutse refused to comment when Sunday News got in touch with her.

“I have no comment. I do not want to talk about these things,” she said before slamming down the phone.

ZACC Clears Bulawayo Mayor

The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission has cleared Bulawayo mayor, Councillor Solomon Mguni and the Town Clerk, Mr Christopher Dube, of any wrongdoing regarding corruption allegations that were levelled against them.
Last year, residents questioned Clr Mguni’s leasing of a 3,5 hectare piece of land at Lower Rangemore under a 25-year lease at $165 per month rent. The local authority had received 24 objections where a total of 33 different issues were raised from residents regarding the lease.

In their objections, the residents among other concerns alleged that the mayor had used his privileged access of information to make an application for the said property. The residents claimed that this was an illegitimate deal that promoted clientelism, patronage and capture.

Mr Dube on the other hand was on the radar of the anti-graft body over his purchase a commercial stand, in Selborne Park as part of his proposed conditions of service. The Town Clerk already had another stand adjacent to the one he was being offered.

According to a letter from Zacc chairperson, Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo, dated 5 October 2021, the anti-graft body noted that all the resolutions were done above board. Justice Matanda-Moyo revealed that the commission had held a rapid compliance spot check on the allocation of stands following the issues that were raised between 14 and 18 September last year.

“The findings were that the council resolved to offer a commercial stand for which the Town Clerk was expected to pay the full price. Furthermore the council was to purchase a new vehicle which the Town Clerk was to buy at 25 percent net book value.

With regards to the mayor’s 25 year lease for 3,5 hectare agriculture land at Lower Rangemore, the findings were that, the mayor is allowed to apply for urban agriculture land like any other Bulawayo resident and be subjected to same rentals which are prevailing in that area,” reads part of the letter.

The Zacc chairperson said the body will soon be carrying out a comprehensive compliance and systems review at the Bulawayo City Council, after which they will now be carrying quarterly monitoring and evaluation.

“During the review exercise an implementation matrix will be produced which will be shared by the team to management and councillors on their exit interview. Furthermore, signing of the implementation matrix will be held between the City of Bulawayo and Zacc, which will pave way for quarterly monitoring and evaluation of the matrix,” said Justice Matanda-Moyo.

Commenting on the outcome, Clr Mguni said it put to rest speculation that they had selfishly awarded themselves the land. He said the quarterly review would help them ensure that their systems were above board and help deter any council employee or councillor from involving themselves in any corruption.

“This vindicates us as a city and puts to rest some speculations that we are involved in corrupt practices and we engage in unprocedural selfish award of land to ourselves at the expense of service delivery.

To us it was also a good opportunity to have our systems benchmarked against best practices and we are glad that going forward we will now go to the next phase where the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission will work with our team to develop further tools for systems compliance review and the drawing up of an implementation matrix that we will co-manage its operation.

We want to thank Zacc for the opportunity that they have given us to develop our systems and to work on all our policies that require compliance with principles of accountable governance and prudent use of public resources,” said Clr Mguni. -Sunday News

Fresh Chaos Hits AFM Church

A new fight is brewing in the Apostolic Faith Mission (AFM) amid claims that followers of a splinter group led by Reverend Cossam Chiangwa are planning to besiege church premises countrywide and disrupt services today.

The battle to control AFM started in 2018 and has played out in the public for the past three years. It resulted in the emergence of two rival camps, one led by Reverend Amon Dubie Madawo and the other by Rev Cossam Chiangwa who was the church’s former deputy president.

AFM Harare north province overseer Reverend Charukwa who is under Reverend Amon Dubie Madawo’s faction has since sent a communique to congregants, urging them to “defend and guard the church” as the rival faction that recently lost a court ruling to control the church’s property is planning to cause anarchy today.

The statement, which the state owned Sunday Mail reports on, reads:

“Be at the church way before your usual starting time or have people at the church who will stop our erstwhile brothers when they try to enter the premises. Make sure all doors and gates are locked and secure only to be opened when we start church. This ensures maximum security on our part.”

In another statement dated October 16, the interim secretary general of AFM, Elder Chiwaridzo alleges that there have been recent cases of contempt of court, unlawful entry and trespassing at a number of the church’s assemblies around the country.

“Relevant reports on the transgression were lodged to the police with the intention of allowing the law to deal with the offenders. Charges were duly preferred to the offenders,” reads the statement.

Elder Chiwaridzo also said they were pushed to respond in view of threats of violence and lawlessness from the rival faction.

“Our leaders are required to ensure adequate protection of all members and church property in light of a call to lawlessness from some quarters . . .”

In a terse response to this reporter last night Pastor Chiangwa, whose faction is accused of plotting the planned disturbances, denied that they had plans to disrupt services.

“We are not aware of any plot to besiege a church congregation, we remain a peaceful people no matter what,” he said.

The dispute between the two camps spilled into the Supreme Court after a group led by Rev Chiangwa filed an appeal against a High Court order which gave Rev Madawo’s faction blessings to lead the church.

The row over control of the church and its assets was sparked by the church’s council meeting held at Rufaro, Masvingo in 2018.

The meeting, as part of its resolutions, passed a vote of no confidence on the president of the church Reverend Aspher Madziyire. The results of the council meeting saw leaders of both factions taking the matter to court. -Sunday Mail

PTUZ Position on Non Vaccinated Teachers: To Report or Not to Report for Work?

16 October 2021

We have read in the press and from unsubstantiated utterances by gvt officials that non vaccinated civil servants must stop reporting for work forthwith.

Salah Matches Drogba’s PSL Record

We Don’t Eat WiFi, Health Professionals Tell Government

Remembering Leonard Musorowenyoka Dembo

Government Orders Unvaccinated Civil Servants To Stop Reporting For Duty

CIVIL servants who defied government’s order to be vaccinated against COVID-19 should not report for duty starting Monday, their employer said yesterday.

The civil servants will also be denied their salaries and allowances.

Though it could not be immediately established how many civil servants will be affected by the order, there are fears that thousands have not been vaccinated due to logistical challenges, religion and other factors.

Government, through a gazette of September 17, gave its workers until yesterday to get jabbed, failure which will result in them being barred from work, forfeiting their salaries and allowances.

COVID-19 chief co-ordinator in the President’s Office, Agnes Mahomva, said no unvaccinated civil servants would be allowed at work starting Monday until they get their doses.

She said the move was not meant to punish, but to protect the general public.

“Everybody is following Statutory Instrument 234 of 2021 and legally, that is what is binding everyone. So, whether there are any other decisions that come later but for now, everybody is bound by the law,” Mahomva said.

“People might appeal, talk about this and so on but within the timelines of the law, that is what is on the ground now. It’s like saying someone should have a licence, but have someone saying he or she is appealing not to have one.

“As long as that law is there, it is the one speaking to what is on the ground. We just need to abide by the law and if the people haven’t, they stay home according to the law and if something changes, it will be communicated as usual.

“It is really genuinely trying to say, look, you have to be protected, not to say, we want people not to work as punishment. Government is taking health as a priority.”

Information permanent secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana said the civil servants who refuse to be vaccinated would be subjected to disciplinary action.

“D-Day for civil servants (as) today is the deadline for civil servants to get vaccinated or be barred from the workplace and not get paid while so barred,” Mangwana said.

“Those who refuse to be fully vaccinated shall be subject to disciplinary action for refusing to obey a lawful instruction,” he added.

But civil servants described the move as grossly unfair.

Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions secretary-general David Dzatsunga described the move as victimisation.

“When it comes to workers, it should be a product of dialogue. Let us sit down and agree on how this can be administered so that we don’t have victimisation,” he said.

“You cannot just make pronouncements that affect people without involving them. You cannot use a counterproductive command approach on such issues. It can have a disruptive effect and is clear victimisation.”

Last month, government said it would force unvaccinated civil servants and teachers to resign in a bid to ramp up the uptake of COVID-19 jabs.

Meanwhile, Mahomva told a Science Café in Harare that Zimbabwe’s vaccination programme has been marred by setbacks despite being viewed as one of the best in Africa.

She said the challenges were mainly technical with human resources leading the toll.

“The vaccination programme has been doing much better but it has its own challenges, we will never lie about it. We have challenges with human resources,” she said.

There has been widespread criticism of the programme which started in February this year as a control measure to the deadly global pandemic that has been ravaging the world since December 2019.

“In terms of our resources, we said we need to look at financing mechanisms that are innovative. We had budgeted for US$100 million but we have used more than that. I’m glad to say we have used more than US$127 million and we did wait on donors, though we did some paperwork for that,” she said.

More than 2,4 million people are fully vaccinated against a set target of 10 million.- NewsDay

Leicester City’s Zimbabwean Star Ready To Excel

Leicester City youngster Tawanda Maswanhise has committed his future to the Warriors but wants Zifa to clean its house first, his father Jeffrey has revealed.

Tawanda holds English citizenship but qualifies to feature for the national team through his Zimbabwean parents.

The 18-year-old has been dubbed one of the brightest prospects at the Foxes academy and trained with the senior squad in the pre-season.

The attacker was also standout for the club’s under-18s and caught the eye of coach Brendan Rodgers for the first towards the end of the previous campaign. He made his debut appearance in the first-team squad in May in a league match against Manchester United.

Speaking to the Herald, Jeffrey, a former sprinter who represented Zimbabwe at the 1998 and 2002 Commonwealth Games, explained his son’s desire to play for the Warriors.

What You Need To Know About Meningitis

Achievement of high immunization coverage, development of new affordable vaccines, and improved prevention strategies and outbreak response;

Health Workers Scoff At Gvt Offer

By A Correspondent- Health professionals yesterday scoffed at the government’s offer that is meant to stop mass resignations saying their employer was focusing on trivialities.

The government offered to provide non-monetary incentives such as staff accommodation, transport, vehicle loans, provision of meals and WiFi facilities to reduce brain drain in the health sector.

Speaking during a post-Cabinet briefing on Tuesday, Information minister Monica Mutsvangwa said an inter-ministerial committee identified measures to accelerate the provision of the incentives.

Zimbabwe Senior Doctors Association president Shingai Nyaguse accused the government of ignoring the salary issue, which he said was the real problem that was causing the brain drain. Nyaguse tweeted on Thursday:

We remain concerned with suggestions that WiFi and canteens are incentives that will resolve the ongoing challenges.

The employer has been ignoring the elephants in the room, which includes issues of fair and commensurate remuneration, an enabling, conducive working environment and medical insurance for healthcare workers. The lack of consultative dialogue is glaring.

Zimbabwe Nurses Association president Enoch Dongo said: “It’s the employer’s responsibility to give Wi-Fi and canteen at workplaces as a courtesy, not allowance or incentive.” He added:

The government offer was not supposed to be publicised since it’s their responsibility to do that. It is obvious the so-called incentive will not stop nurses from going outside the country whatsoever.

Dongo said health professionals want a living wage and improvement of the working environment. He said they have other needs including schools fees for their children that cannot be paid for through “ WiFi or getting sadza at work.”

Doctors and nurses have gone on strike on several occasions since 2017 to pressure the government to review their salaries, but their employer has been employing military tactics to force them back to work.

Serial Killer Escapes From Prison, Murdered By Angry Mob

Maten Wanjala

By A Correspondent- A confessed serial killer who escaped from police custody two days ago has been beaten to death by an angry mob in Kenya.

20-year-old Masten Wanjala, who confessed to killing at least 12 young boys, was beaten to death near his home village in Bungoma County, in western Kenya.

News of the death of the 20-year-old was confirmed by the local police. Wanjala started his killing spree when he was just 16-years-old. He admitted to killing more than 10 young boys during a five-year period. He also confessed to drugging them and in some cases drinking their blood.

He was arrested in July and detained in Nairobi. Following his arrest, his parents disowned him after he confessed to the heinous crimes. However, he managed to escape from police custody and made his way back home.

His return was short-lived as he was recognised by some neighbours who raised alarm. This attracted the attention of the villagers who then attacked the alleged serial killer and beat him to death.

“We are not sure how he managed to travel all the way from Nairobi to his rural home,” Musyoki Mutungi said. “It is the curious villagers who first identified him and went ahead to kill him even before the police could be informed.”

Wanjala killed his first victim when he was just 16 years old, a similar age to some of his victims.

He posed as a football coach to lure his victims to secluded areas, after which he attacked them.

In some cases, he took them as hostages for ransom.

The killings took place in Nairobi, and areas of eastern and western Kenya.

Three police officers who were on duty when he escaped on Wednesday have been charged with aiding the escape of a suspect and negligence.

Police say they noticed he had disappeared during the morning roll call. There was no sign of a break-in at the prison cell.

In a series of tweets, the Kenyan Directorate of Criminal Investigations expressed regret that Wanjala did not face justice.

It said “the law of the jungle as applied by irate villagers prevailed”.

Nike Executive Larry Miller Opens Up On 1965 Murder

By A Correspondent- A long-time Nike executive in the US has revealed that he shot and killed a teenage boy in the streets of West Philadelphia 56 years ago.

Larry Miller, chairman of the Jordan Brand, spoke about the 1965 murder in an interview with Sports Illustrated.

“It was eating me up inside,” he said of his actions at age 16, when he was “a straight-up gangbanger”.

Mr Miller served a jail sentence for the murder. He says he did not lie about it, but he did keep it secret.

The admission comes ahead of the launch of his memoir next year.

Mr Miller said he had joined the Cedar Avenue gang in West Philadelphia at age 13, quickly changing from “a straight-A student” and drinking every day.

When a friend was killed by a rival gang member, Mr Miller, then just 16, says he grabbed a .38 handgun, got drunk with three friends and went in search of retribution.

Instead, on 30 September 1965, he fired into the chest of the first person they encountered: 18-year-old Edward White.

He said:

That’s what makes it even more difficult for me, because it was for no reason at all.

Mr Miller described the decision to come clean about his past – which he has long hidden from his children, friends and closest business associates – as “really difficult”. He told Sports Illustrated:

Because for years, I ran from this. I tried to hide this and hope that people didn’t find out about it.

Mr Miller has been at Nike since 1997 and manages the daily operations of Nike Basketball, the Jordan Brand and Converse.

Mr Miller says he hopes his story can help steer at-risk youth away from a life of violence and inspire formerly incarcerated people to know they can still make a contribution to society

Cheating Man Lured By Lover’s Hubby, Killed

By A Correspondent- An alleged philandering man from Chivi died after he was stabbed to death by his lover’s husband. The suspicious husband lured the cheating man into an elaborately planned ambush before pouncing on him and stabbing him several times, leading to his death.

iHarare has learned from the Zimbabwe Republic Police that the alleged killer has been identified as 25-year-old Laurey Tafirei from Madungwe Village in Chivi. The deceased’s identity has not yet been released. The police only confirmed that he was 36-years-old.

According to the police, Tafirei suspected that his wife was having an adulterous affair with the deceased. He then plotted to lure him into an ambush in order to exact his revenge.

Tafirei then took control of his wife’s phone and impersonated her in text messages with her alleged lover. While pretending to be his wife, he informed the now deceased that he wanted to spend some quality time with him.

He then directed the deceased to a secluded place for the illicit rendezvous. The deceased, who was unsuspecting, duly showed up at the rendezvous spot where Tafirei was lying in wait.

Tafirei allegedly stabbed him several times. After killing the cheating man, Tafirei went on the run and is yet to be apprehended.

In an update on the crime, the police said,

The ZRP is investigating a case of murder which occurred in Madungwe Village, Chivi on 15/10/21, where a Laurey Tafirei (25) stabbed his wife’s boyfriend (36) after seeing a love message on his spouse’s cellphone.

The suspect chatted using the wife’s cellphone inviting the unwary victim to a secluded place near a borehole and stabbed him on the back and chest. Meanwhile, Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect who disappeared after committing the offence.

Cops Who Assaulted Zanu PF Stalwarts In Soup

A Zimbabwean anti-riot police officer stands guard on an empty street on August 2, 2018 in Harare, Zimbabwe. Tension remains high following yesterday’s deadly clashes between security forces and people demonstrating against alleged election fraud, with the Zimbabwe Election Commission (ZEC) still to announce the results of Monday’s presidential election, the first since Robert Mugabe was ousted last year. (Footage by Dan Kitwood/Getty Images)

By A Correspondent| Fifteen police officers, who were arrested on Wednesday, have been taken to court for allegedly disrupting a Zanu PF meeting and assaulting party members in Bindura, Mashonaland Central province, two weeks ago.

The 15 were taken to court yesterday to answer to a charge of public violence. They were thrown into cells in police uniform, according to police sources.

Dick Wisdom Mhonda (38), Munyaradzi Mwaka Marowa (32), Tatenda Bradwell Makuvaza (28), Ndlela Madhenkosi (29), Darlington Tsikai (34), Evidence Kusemwaenda (33), Yeukai Beatrice Guvamombe (36), Allex Zviramwa (43), Raymond Guveya (35), Trymore Nyambo (37), Tawanda Chakanyuka (32), Martin Mutize (32), Victor Sibanda (34), Emmanuel Timoti (39) and Brian Hlahla (41) are all from Bindura Rural Police Station.

Part of the charge sheet read: “On October 5, 2021, at Mupandira Business Centre, Musana, Bindura, the accused, who are police officers and their accomplices, who are still at large, went to the place of occurrence armed with batons and tear canisters.

“The accused also had two police dogs and were driving in three private motor vehicles, a Honda Fit, a Nissan Vanette belonging to Lloyd Chiropa, who is still outstanding, and a Nissan Sunny belonging to accused number one.

“The accused were numbering 18. Upon arrival at the business centre, the accused, without being provoked, disembarked from the motor vehicles and indiscriminately assaulted the complainants using batons.”

The charge sheet further read: “The accused also set the police dogs and released tear smoke on the complainants which caused pandemonium at the business centre. By so doing, the accused forcibly and, to a serious extent, disturbed peace, security or order of the public and invaded the rights of the complainants.

“The complainants sustained varying degrees of injuries and were referred to hospital for treatment. The medical
reports can be produced as evidence.”

They appeared before Bindura magistrate Tinashe Ndokera with prosecutor Clement Kuwanda saying the 15 did not deserve bail because as police officers they were conversant with the country’s porous borders, which makes them potential flight risks.

They were remanded in custody to today for bail ruling.

Some of the complainants, the police said, were old and disabled, hence the moral blameworthiness of the accused was very high.

According to police sources, the 15 were arrested for bashing Zanu PF supporters who were at a district restructuring meeting at the business centre.

This was after three of their members had been beaten up by ruling party supporters while trying to arrest a suspect, who is believed to be a Zanu PF member.

“Three police officers went to arrest a wanted person and upon arresting, people from the village including the accused began to attack the police, leading to one of the police officers getting seriously injured,” a police source said.

“The other police officers then reacted in a bid to arrest the culprits, so in the process interrupted a Zanu PF meeting. Now the police are under fire for reacting and disrupting Zanu PF elections. Things have turned nasty.”- NewsDay

Gvt “Fires” Unvaccinated Civil Servants

By A Correspondent- Civil servants who defied government’s order to be vaccinated against COVID-19 should not report for duty starting Monday, their employer said yesterday.

Mavangira said:

MDC Alliance Snubs Ceremony As Zanu Pf Councillor Is Sworn In

By A Correspondent- Zanu-PF councillor Kiven Mutimbanyoka was yesterday sworn in as Chitungwiza deputy mayor at a colourful ceremony that was snubbed by opposition councillors.

He replaces Musa Mukweza who was recalled by the MDC-Alliance.

Clr Mutimbanyoka took the oath of office before Chitungwiza acting town clerk Mrs Evangelista Machona promising to make the town great again.

“I am glad to have been sworn in as the deputy mayor at a programme that was well attended without any glitches. I want to thank the people for having faith in me.

“Having bestowed all the trust in me I will do everything possible to make sure that the inhabitants of Chitungwiza are accorded the best in terms of service delivery,” he said.

Clr Mutimbanyoka said his focus was only on delivering, serving the people and to make Chitungwiza great again.

“My team and I are going to work tirelessly in making sure that things happen in Chitungwiza.

The culture of doing business at the council should change in a positive way such that our people will appreciate and feel compelled to pay the bills knowing fully well that the hard earned money is going towards service delivery,” he said.

The deputy mayor also pledged to work harmoniously with everyone willing and interested to make sure that the town changes for the better.

“We are here to serve and work for the people. Failure, we should be held accountable. I thank residents for the support they are rendering to us as the councillors.

“We need to just work together as a team, as a team we are definitely going to win,” he said.

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo appointed Clr Mutimbanyoka saying the council had failed to do so, or had neglected to appoint a deputy mayor in terms of Section 104 of the Urban Councils Act.

With the lack of action by the council, with an MDC majority, the minister was then responsible for the appointment.

“In terms Section 104 of the Urban Council’s Act I hereby appoint Kiven Mutimbanyoka ward 13 councillor as the deputy mayor for Chitungwiza Municipality with immediate effect,” he said.-statemedia
