Mnangagwa “Praises” MDC Alliance

THE ruling Zanu PF party yesterday turned the commissioning of the refurbished Kudzanayi Bus Terminus in Gweru into a campaign rally with hundreds of supporters attending the event clad in party regalia.

The event was officiated by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who was accompanied by former Vice-President Kembo Mohadi, Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, Local Government minister July Moyo, and State Security minister Owen Ncube, among other senior party and government officials.

Mnangagwa commended the City of Gweru for spearheading the refurbishment of the bus terminus, which he said was in line with government’s vision 2030.

“I almost said you (MDC Alliance mayor and councillors) should always be there (because of the good work in refurbishing the bus terminus), but a Zanu PF member should be in charge,” Mnangagwa jokingly said.

“Gweru is living vision 2030 and this is commendable.

“The state-of-the-art infrastructure accommodates more than 500 vendors who were once operating in a chaotic environment.”

He said private players should come on board and implement similar ventures to uplift cities.

“Such infrastructure improves the working conditions of informal traders.

“But l urge you not to charge high fees for informal traders just because you now have a state-of-the-art terminus.

“You should charge fees that guarantee affordability and sustainability.

“ You should charge reasonable fees,” he said.

Muchinguri-Kashiri said the project had also benefited war veterans.

“We also have war veterans who are informal traders at the refurbished markets,” she said.

Mangudya Praises Zim Dollar

By A Correspondent- Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe Governor John Mangudya said Zimbabwe has a single currency, the Zimbabwe dollar, and there is no currency called RGTS or Nostro.

Responding to Alpha Media Holdings chairman Trevor Ncube on the platform In Conversation with Trevor, Mangudya said the Zimbabwe dollar was the country’s sole currency.

Ncube had asked the central bank chief to shed light on the identity of the local currency since traders use various terms such as EcoCash, Nostro, Swipe, RTGS and bond, among others.

In response, Mangudya said:

Our local currency is called the Zimbabwe dollar. I always meet people who say RTGS, bond note, the local currency in Zimbabwe is called the Zimbabwe dollar

… The confusion comes from the fact that in 2019 when we separated the local currency from the foreign currency, and we had a Statutory Instrument 33 of 2019, we referred to the local currency as the RTGS, and subsequently changed to the local currency called the Zimbabwe dollar.

So there is Nostro, and such because people are perhaps too educated they use all kinds of acronyms.

Asked by Ncube if he was not worried about presiding over an economy where so many acronyms are used, Mangudya said:

It does not worry me, because there is diversity in Zimbabwe.

As long as we speak the same language, I know when they are referring to the RTGS, they are talking about the Zimbabwe dollar.

Maybe from this conversation, we need to change the narrative.

The narrative of our local currency is called the Zimbabwe dollar, and the foreign currency that we are using here, we normally use the US dollar, rand or British pounds, but predominantly in the market there is the US dollar, that is what is being used.

The other currencies can be accepted. There is nothing called Nostro.

Nostro, these are accounts for banks in foreign banks, these are foreign currency accounts.

So, in the foreign currency accounts, we have got foreign currency in those accounts, but we do not have Nostro.

So, people confuse again the term Nostro.

Nostro means our account with you in a foreign bank.

The opposite of Nostro is Vostro, which means their account in our box.

So, the term Nostro, what they are referring to because you still remember we had a virtual US dollar and money that was physical money in the Nostro accounts.

I empathise with the people of Zimbabwe, I empathise with them.

I know what they are referring to.

It does not bother me because I know exactly what they are saying, but for purposes of this conversation, it is local currency, foreign currency accounts and foreign currency.

COVID-19 Hits Bulawayo Hospitals

Over 170 doctors and nurses at Mpilo Central Hospital and the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) are in isolation after testing Covid-19 positive, a development that is likely to cripple health care service delivery at Bulawayo’s two major referral hospitals.
.
The bulk of the health workers that have tested positive are nurses.

Dr Solwayo Ngwenya

The latest infections were recorded over the past two weeks, a trend which Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said is worrying. Mpilo has recorded 77 cases and UBH 99 cases among health workers since the beginning of this month.

On Sunday, the country recorded 2 138 new cases and three Covid-19 related deaths with Bulawayo recording two deaths and 200 new infections.

According to the Ministry of Health and Child Care daily report, as of Sunday, the country had recorded 167 140 cases, 129 776 recoveries and 4 738 deaths since March last year. Active cases rose to 32 626 from 2 843 in 11 days.

Over the last two weeks, Bulawayo recorded 3 277 new Covid-19 cases, the highest being on December 9 when 679 cases were recorded in a single day. Five deaths were recorded in the metropolitan province during the same period.

Statistics from the Ministry of Health and Child Care show that by Saturday, a total of 242 Covid-19 patients had been hospitalised with 53 new admissions. At least 211 had mild to moderate symptoms, 24 severe and six were admitted in intensive care units (ICUs).

A total of 3 956 020 people had received their first Covid-19 vaccine while 2 976 972 had received their second jab countrywide.

Prof Ngwenya said they recorded 77 cases of infections among doctors and nurses.

“Since the beginning of December, we have 77 members of staff who were infected with Covid-19 and they self-isolated.

We are now being affected in terms of human resources and at the same time there is a rise in hospitalisation and this can only play out to be a disaster,” he said.

Prof Ngwenya said the high number of health care workers in isolation was affecting service delivery at the hospital which is now forced to operate with skeletal staff.

“We had a lot of infections among our staff and they had to go home on quarantine resulting in our services being crippled,” he said.

Prof Ngwenya said they recorded four Covid-19 deaths in the last four days.

“As our staff are on isolation, this affects our ability to render health care to the rising number of hospitalisations. Unfortunately, despite measures by Government to ensure workers have adequate PPEs, community transmissions are so high hence our workers are at risk as they use public transport and mingle with asymptomatic people who continue spreading the virus,” he said.

In July, 63 health workers comprising of doctors and nurses at Mpilo Central Hospital had to go on isolation after testing positive to Covid-19.

UBH acting chief executive officer Dr Harrison Rambanapasi said since the beginning of December, 99 doctors and nurses tested positive for Covid-19.

“Since the first of December we have had 99 health workers across the board including students testing positive and isolating at home. However, no staff member has been admitted, which means they are not very sick,” he said.

“If you look at the national statistics, the positivity rate at UBH is almost the same with the national one, which shows that the Omicron is highly transmissible.”

Dr Rambanapasi urged citizens to continue to get vaccinated and adhere to health regulations to curb the spread of the virus. The UBH has a workforce of more than 1 600.

“If you look at the issue of testing, logistically it is difficult to do mass testing in view of a workforce of more than 1 600. Testing them routinely might end up affecting service delivery as that means people will have to queue to get tested,” said Dr Rambanapasi.

“However, we only test those with symptoms and in the process of doing so, we have had a significant number of our staff testing positive for Covid.”

President Mnangagwa recently announced new lockdown measures.

Some of those measures include mandatory 10-day quarantine for all returning residents and visitors. The new regulations stipulate that everyone entering Zimbabwe must undergo a Covid-19 PCR test even when they produce a Covid-19-free certificate from elsewhere.

The President’s address was in response to reports of a new strain of Covid-19 virus which has been reported in many countries in Sadc and beyond.

Omicron has a high number of mutations, 32, in its spike protein, and preliminary evidence suggests an increased risk of reinfection, when compared with other variants of concern. –Chronicle

FACT CHECK: Has South Africa Govt Restored Zim Special Permits? | JUST IN

By Farai Hove | An article circulated around the Zimbabwean community claiming that the South African government has reversed its decision to discontinue the Zimbabwe Presidential Exemption Permits.

Nicholas Mabena

This claim is untrue. The Chairperson of the Zimbabwean community in South African Nicholas Mabhena narrates this matter clarifying as at 2am Tuesday 14th December:

“Greetings everyone I have been just been reading online newspapers and … one gets to understand from journalists is the claim that the South African government has reversed its decision to discontinue the ZEP.

“On online media platforms, I find people celebrating that the decision by the South African cabinet not to renew the permits has been reversed, which is not true.

“Let’s get to understand this so that we do not mislead holders of the Zimbabwe exemption permit and also the problem is that in the world of social media, one of the challenges is that we rush to make announcements or we rush to scream out without understanding the directive or what is its meaning, and then will mislead the public.”

Mabhena spoke for over 20 minutes further revealing that nothing has changed. (Video below)

He said people should not be driven by what journalists say but by facts.

Unidentified Man Drowns In Lake Chivero

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) is appealing to members of the public to help in the identification of a man who drowned in Lake Chivero on Saturday.

ZRP said the deceased man’s body was found floating on Saturday after sunset. Pindula News presents the police statement on the case:

The ZRP is appealing to members of the public to assist in the identification of a male adult whose body was found floating in Lake Chivero on 12/12/21 at about 0900 hours. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station.

While swimming at the Lake is said to be “at own risk,” safety measures that were in place on Saturday were not enough to prevent drowning.

There were not enough barriers to block holidaymakers from going to the deep ends. Neither were there any Lake attendants to monitor the public.

This reporter witnessed some individuals, about three, swimming as far as 75 metres from the shores and one wonders what could have happened if one encountered difficulties whilst in the waters.

Some of the individuals in the Lake were visibly drunk.

The majority of swimmers were aged between 13 and 40 while the rest were either young kids who were with their parents or a few who were over 40.- Pindula News

VP Karenyi-Kore Implores Young Women To Register To Vote In Numbers

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance vice president Hon Lynette Karenyi-Kore has urged young people in Chivi North Constituency to register to vote in numbers.

The Zanu PF rigging system will find it difficult to manipulate figures citizens vote in large numbers.

Addressing villagers and community leaders in Chivi on Saturday, Hon Karenyi-Kore described peasant farming as strenous and stressful.

” The MDC Alliance government will introduce modern farming methods. Our people are overworking yet what they produce is not enough to fend for their families,” said VP Karenyi-Kore .

“Yesterday, VP
@KarenyiKore
toured Chivi South where she met community leaders, participated in an event to mark #16Days& was invited by citizens to tour their fields & hear their concerns. Every homestead & every village is saying #NgaapindeHakeMukomana. #6MillionVotes,” MDC Alliance said in a statement.

I’ve Got No Income – Chiundura-Moyo

The respected veteran novelist, playwright and film-maker, Aaron Chiundura-Moyo, has said he doesn’t have a consistent source of income.

The 67-year-old, who claims to be living by the grace of God in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic, says his life is now taking care of itself.

Chiundura Moyo

He told H-Metro Entertainment & Lifestyle that he is no longer worried about what he will eat or drink when he wakes up.

“I don’t have a living formula now because a lot of things have changed in our lives as compared to the way we used to survive long back.

“Covid-19 and piracy have r  eally affected us and we no longer have a consistent source of income despite all the books and scripts that we wrote for film and television.

“I have reached a point where I am no longer begging for help because no one is forth-coming.

“Zimbabweans have a belief that popular figures like us are never affected by the same problems our peers face and as a result, we are dying in our homes. We are suffering in our homes but the truth is that our fame does not translate into fortune,” he said.

Chiundura-Moyo who has resorted to online coaching clinics said they were also victims of failing to adjust to digitalisation.

“It’s sad that the world that we are living in has gone digital and some of us, the so-called serious writers we are still stuck in the past.

“Instead of embracing the new technology, some of us who still prefer using the pen and the typewriter are now paying the price.

“However, I have been advised to do online coaching clinics but it’s not paying as we used to do,” he said.

Chiundura-Moyo, who has written several Shona novels before and after independence, bemoaned lack of royalties from publishers for worsening their plight.

“We last received royalties long back and we have since forgotten whether they are still there because our sector has been hit by piracy.

“It’s sad to note that some of the books we have written which are set books are now being pirated I school.

“You will find the whole school studying photocopied set books, which has really affected us.

“Long back when your book was considered a set book, you will be guaranteed cash but now it has become a pipe dream,” he said.

The Glen View based writer said he was still conducting physical mentorship courses with indiviuals although it was not rewarding.

“There are some people who still flock my house for mentorship courses but some of them are poor and I can’t afford to brush them aside.

“There are however some who are serious, especially those aged between 25 years and above who are mature.

“I try by all means to assist these people but the majority want free things and I can’t assist all of them for free,” he said.

Despite the challenges he faces, Chiundura-Moyo says he would not throw in the towel.

“I can’t quit now but embrace new technology and even try to write and post my works online to remain relevant as is the case with the new crop of writers.

“I have noted that I can’t continue to be stuck in the past when I can easily adjust and embrace change.

“However, we are struggling to make ends meet and I don’t even know what I will eat tomorrow but my life is taking care of itself,” he said.

Chiundura-Moyo is one of the writers who has written several books, radio and television plays that are still as wonderful as ever but remain poor. -H Metro

Mnangagwa Hijacks Kudzanayi Bus Terminus

The bus terminus was refurbished by Bentach Resources at a cost of US$1,6 million.

Informal traders have, however, complained that bay fees charged by Bentach were beyond their reach.

Vendors have to fork out between $400 and $800 per day, with representatives of informal traders questioning the poverty alleviation strategy given the high fees.- Newsday

Sikhala Slams Zanu PF “Murderers”

Tinashe Sambiri|Fearless MDC Alliance vice chairperson Hon Job Sikhala has bluntly declared that everyone in Zanu PF is a murderer.

In a sharp statement on Twitter, Hon Sikhala slammed the Zanu PF regime for killing innocent citizens.

“The environment you are in shapes your mindset. I am a ghetto boy from St. Mary’s having grown up in a peasant set up. I grew up in opposition politics. It’s in my bloodstream.

Those who grew up around murderers become murderers themselves.

Everyone in ZPF is a murderer,” declared Hon Sikhala.

Mnangagwa “Endorses” Corruption

Tinashe Sambiri|The Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has been mocked for practically reducing himself to a ward councillor after officiating at the opening of Kudzanai Terminus in Gweru.

Mr Mnangagwa has a knack for officiating at relatively low key events.

Political observers say the Zanu PF leader should leave low key programmes to councillors and heads of responsible government departments.

Former MDC MP Jefferyson Chitando observed:

“What’s so special about Gweru Kudzanai Rank ?

This is daylight robbery. Mnangagwa, by officially opening the so called US$3 million Rank, he has endorsed corruption.

Mnangagwa must demand independent cost evaluation.”

Impact Of STIs On Global Health

WHO STI Research Priority Setting Technical Advisory Group

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have a profound impact on sexual and reproductive health (SRH) worldwide. In 2020, an estimated 374 million new infections occurred globally with one of the 4 curable STIs: syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis.

[1] The Global Health Sector Strategy on STIs (2016-2021) sets out several guiding principles for ending the STI epidemic as a public health problem,[2] but many gaps in evidence limit available guidance and tools, and progress toward STI prevention and control has been slow.[3] As an updated global strategy is developed for the next decade, new research is essential to strengthen the evidence base for new and improved interventions and guidelines including, but not limited to: the epidemiology, risk factors, and consequences of STIs; development and evaluation of behavioral, biomedical, clinical, and programmatic STI interventions and strategies; and scaling up existing interventions.

WHO is undertaking an exercise to identify global and regional STI research priorities. The systematic priority setting approach will involve consultation with a wide range of global stakeholders.

A Technical Advisory Group (TAG) on STI Research Priority Setting, consisting of external experts, will contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of the research priority setting exercise. The STI Research Priority Setting TAG will be expected to oversee the process and to consider and include perspectives across regions, gender, populations and socioeconomics.

In its capacity as an advisory body to WHO, the STI Research Priority Setting TAG shall have the following functions:

Develop the priority setting framework (eg. clarify the objectives, context, scope, and focus areas of the process).
Review and provide comments to WHO on the research priority setting process protocol and survey tools.

Generate lists of national, regional and global STI experts and stakeholder groups to ensure a broad range of survey participants are reached during the priority setting process implementation.
Participate in consolidating STI research questions solicited from stakeholder surveys.

Ensure that the proposed criteria for scoring research questions will address the objectives of the exercise.
Review analysis and results of ranking and systematic listing of priority research questions (with data management/statistical support).
Contribute to the WHO finalization. publishing and dissemination of global STI research priorities.

The STI Research Priority Setting TAG will meet with the WHO Secretariat throughout this process. The first meeting will be convened no earlier than 13 December 2021. In keeping with the requirements of the WHO Advisory Groups guidelines and the WHO Compliance, Risk Management and Ethics Office, we are posting online short biographies of the TAG members.

The listed candidates have also submitted a Declaration of Interest form stating any conflict of interests. WHO has applied its internal processes to ensure that the performance of the above tasks by members of this group will be transparent and without any significant conflict of interests (academic, financial, or other) that could affect the credibility of the process.

Nevertheless, WHO invites the general public to review the experts and stakeholders involved and provide feedback regarding any member deemed to have a significant conflict of interest with respect to the terms of reference for this group.

Comments and feedbacks should be cordial and constructive, and sent to [email protected] .

Unpacking Crocodile Brutality

Report on the demonstration against the presence of Mnangagwa at COP26 : By Deborah Harry

On the 31st of October 2021, myself, and a number of MDC Alliance members from the UK South West District took the long journey to Glasgow for a demonstration against the presence of the dictator of Zimbabwe Emmerson Mnangagwa at the COP26 Summit.

Reasons for attending the demonstration
There are several reasons why Emmerson Mnangagwa should not have been invited to attend this summit and below are a few of them:

• Mnangagwa does not care about ordinary Zimbabweans lives, let alone the future of the country and world. He knows nothing about climate change and if he did, he wouldn’t care about it unless there was personal gain for him and his close allies.

• Mnangagwa is leading as the most corrupt and ruthless leader in Zimbabwe’s history. A government that is looting resources, including mass deforestation being carried out by their Chinese network. Mass deforestation has been shown to worsen climate change.

• Mnangagwa is not the legitimate president of Zimbabwe, having taken power via a coup in 2017 and rigging the 2018 General Election for which he also sent the military to crush the 1.8. 2018 protests at which the people of Zimbabwe were demanding the results of the July harmonised elections. Many people from the MDC Alliance have been abducted, jailed, and killed by state agents under his rule. Zimbabweans know that this is not the person voted for by the majority, yet he was going to use his presence at COP26 seeking endorsement by the international community.

Since his rise to power by force, Mnangagwa has suspended all democratic processes including by-elections, arrested journalists and MDC Alliance members and officials as well as making it a criminal offence to organise or attend demonstrations. In the midst of this, Mnangagwa and Zanu PF created a fake opposition party that is rightfully being ignored by the Zimbabwean people.

Because of the above reasons and more, in particular the fact that people in Zimbabwe are no longer able to voice their opposition to Mnangagwa’s rule openly, it was very important that we attend the demonstration in Scotland and give a voice to the voiceless. We wanted to make it clear to Mnangagwa and the large entourage he brought over that we are not scared of him and will stand up to him in broad daylight.

Organisation and journey to the demo
Because of the long distance to Scotland, as well as fears about Covid, attendance from people living in England was always going to be difficult. As such there were a few of us from Reading Branch who were able to make the trip. Nonetheless, at the demo, there were going to be several people and groups attending from all the four corners of the UK. As the Reading Branch organizing secretary, I co-ordinated with members who were attending the demo. Individuals were given suggestions on what to do and everyone was clear about their roles. My role was to get #Zanupfmustgo T-shirts. Norah Bomani purchased traveling tickets and designed banners. Abigail Makope made arrangements for our accommodation while
Annah Chikoti organized the designs of flags with various massages.

The Journey
We took the coach to Glasgow, and as expected the journey was long. We left England just before midnight on Sunday October 31st and arrived in Glasgow around 5 am on November 1st.

The Demonstration
There were several groups in attendance at the demo were members from ROHR, ZHRO including MDC Alliance members from various districts in England and Scotland. Famous human rights campaigners and journalists were there namely Chief Ndiweni, Simba Chikanza from ZimEye. We were all singing and chanting anti Zanu PF songs while proudly carrying our placards. A number of passers-by were fascinated by our demo and so approached us asking for more information about the situation in Zimbabwe. Many were misinformed and were under the impression that Zimbabwe had improved since Mugabe left. We had to correct the false narrative by telling them the real truth, which is that Mnangagwa has proved to be even worse than Mugabe.

Overall, the demonstration was a success and was broadcasted live on ZimEye, followed by several hits on social media by Zimbabweans who are pleased to see Mnangagwa being exposed for what he really is, rejected by the people of Zimbabwe at the polls in July 2018 and for callously sending the Zimbabwe National Army on 1.8.2018 who killed six innocent citizens in broad daylight.

Armed Robbers Storm Natpharm, Shoot Security Guard

By A Correspondent- A security guard was shot and injured on Monday morning at the National Pharmaceutical (Natpharm) Company in Bulawayo in a suspected armed robbery incident.

The guard was rushed to United Bulawayo Hospitals for treatment.
Details were still sketchy as to how many robbers had tried to raid Natpharm.

The suspected armed robbers did not get away with anything in the process.
When a Chronicle news crew arrived at the scene at about 8AM, police details had surrounded the premises and were collecting statements from those who were at the scene.
But no one seemed to have much details on the raid with those at the scene saying the shot security guard was the only one who knew exactly what could have happened.

Royal Security chief inspector Mr Musafare Charasika said their security guard had been rushed to hospital following the shooting incident.
“I don’t have the exact details as to what happened. What I have been told is that a driver employed by Natpharm only heard some sounds as he left the premises but did not think it was anything of concern. But when he returned a few minutes later, he found security officers from a neighbouring company at the scene while our security guard was lying on the ground saying he had been shot,” said Mr Charasika.
He said it is not clear where the shooters were coming from.
“No one knows how many raiders were there. It’s probably our guard who has all that information but he has been rushed to hospital for treatment,” he said.
Natpharm spokesperson Mr Munyaradzi Musiiwa said the company will soon release a statement on the shooting incident.

NatPharm is a parastatal with a mandate to procure, store and distribute medicines and medical supplies to public health institutions across the country.

Nyanga Man Wanted For Killing A 5-Year-Old Girl

By A Correspondent- The police are investigating a suspected murder case after the remains of a five-year-old girl were found scattered on Nyanga mountain on Friday.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says the deceased was reported on 4 December while in the company of an unnamed 38-year-old male suspect. Said the police in a statement:

The ZRP is investigating circumstances surrounding a murder case in which remains of a five-year-old female juvenile were found on a mountain in Nyanga on 10/12/21, with some body parts seen scattered at the scene of the crime.

The victim, who had been reported missing on 4/12/21, was last seen in the company of a male suspect (38) walking towards the suspect’s residence. Anyone with information to report at any nearest Police station.

This is happening barely a week after a 25-year-old Shamva man was been arrested for kidnapping a 4-year-old girl whom he dumped on a nearby mountain after stripping her naked.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) say Tatenda Amon left a beer bottle and his hat which were used to identify him.

Some of the many reported cases of abduction and murder of children have reportedly been for ritual purposes.

The most known case is that of Tapiwa Makore, a seven-year-old Murehwa boy who was murdered gruesomely, by his uncle in September last year.

Mnangagwa Defends Commissioning Bus-Stop

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said no development act or project is too small or insignificant.

He made the remarks at the commissioning of Kudzanai Bus Terminus in Gweru.
His remarks come at the backdrop of criticism from his critics who argue that some of the initiatives the president is commissioning could have been commissioned by his junior lieutenants.

They say he is desperate to be seen as championing development when there is little to show. He said:
We all have a responsibility to play towards building our great country. No act or project is too small or too insignificant; brick by brick, stone upon stone let us arise and build our motherland, in line with Vision 2030.
Bus companies & other transport operators must pick up passengers at designated pick-up &drop-off points, kwete zvekungomira kwese kwese [not waiting for transport from every corner]. A process is presently underway to support SMEs to construct modern bus stops which are safe & convenient for use by our people.
This development is part of efforts to modernise our transport infrastructure. It follows a resolution by my Government, instructing all local authorities to take advantage of the Covid-19 induced lockdown to decongest, renovate and refurbish marketplaces.

The refurbishment of the Kudzanayi Long Distance Bus Terminus in Gweru commenced last year.
The terminus was closed in 2020 for an upgrade after Gweru City Council partnered with a private contractor, Bentach Resources.
It was partially opened in August this year.
The refurbishment followed a 9th Cabinet Resolution for Local Authorities to take advantage of the lockdown to decongest, renovate and refurbish marketplaces.

Masvingo Court Closes As Staff Test Positive For Covid-19

By A Correspondent- Masvingo provincial court has closed business after five officials tested positive to following Covid-19.

The five tested positive after the court conducted tests at the workplace on Thursday.

The Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) tests were carried out in Court 5 and there were 25 officials who were tested.

SA Zim Permits Saga Takes New Twist

By A Correspondent- South Africa dumped a plan that would have forced about 200 000 Zimbabwean Exemption Permit holders to leave the country.

The Department of Home Affairs gave no reason for withdrawing the cabinet’s Nov. 25 decision to end the permits.

The decision had drawn a chorus of complaints from human rights groups that threatened to mount a court challenge.

They argued that Zimbabweans who have been living in South Africa for more than a decade were going to be sent back to a country with few economic opportunities and high levels of political repression.

The exemption only applied to Zimbabweans who entered South Africa before the arrangement was enacted in 2009.

Sharon Ekambaram, head of the Refugee and Migrant Rights Programme at Lawyers for Human Rights in Johannesburg, welcomed the reversal. Ekambaram said:

It does call for a debate on how we manage movement in the region without infringing on peoples’ human rights and their dignity.

The plan had been to end the permit on December 31 and allow permit-holders to apply for different visas or be deported after 12 months. There are a few other permits they can apply for.

Ekambaram said previously in a letter signed by 46 organizations, that had the plan gone through, the Zimbabwean permit holders’ lives would have been disrupted.

Children were being denied the opportunity to register for school, employers refusing to renew work contracts, and banks denying services or withholding access to accounts.

Zim Gonyeti Driver Arrested In SA With R3.8 Million Worth Of Fake Shoes

By A Correspondent- A 37-year-old Zimbabwean truck has been arrested by police in Mpumalanga, South Africa, for allegedly smuggling a consignment of counterfeit tekkies worth R3, 8 million from Mozambique.

The man whose identity is yet to be revealed was busted at the neighbouring country’s border with Mozambique (Lebombo) on Thursday last week.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the man was allegedly found in possession of illicit tekkies packed in bales.
“Reports indicate that members of the SAPS from Lebombo Border were on duty on the said day when they noticed a suspicious truck driven by a certain man,” said Brig Mohlala.
“The truck was travelling from Mozambique into the country and the members then conducted a search leading to the discovery of various brands of sneakers starched inside.
“The man, who is Zimbabwean, was then arrested and charged for possession of counterfeit goods”.
He said the suspect is expected to initially appear at the Komatipoort Magistrate’s Court today.
The senior police officer said the truck, which is valued at R3, 5 million had been confiscated along with the counterfeit sneakers.
The incident comes a few days when a 31-year-old Zimbabwean truck driver, Tonderai Moshayi, was arrested for attempting to run over a traffic police officer at the same border post.
His fellow countrymen, Patrick Ncube (31), was also arrested after he attempted to bribe a senior traffic police officer with R4 000 in the Komatipoort area to secure Moshayi’s release.
The matter is now under investigation by South Africa’s organised crime unit, the Hawks.
Hawks spokesperson for Mpumalanga, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi said the duo were expected to make their formal bail application at the Komatipoort Magistrates Court soon.
“It is alleged that on 17 November 2021, Tonderai Moshayi from Zimbabwe who is a truck driver was at Lebombo Port of Entry when he bypassed other truck drivers who had queued for their turn to cross the border.
He was stopped by the traffic police for a routine inspection of the truck. When the routine check was done, it was discovered that the truck had an expired disc,” she said.
After which, Moshayi was asked about the documents of the truck, and he became violent and drove away nearly running over the traffic officer.
He was then pursued and he stopped the truck, and locked himself inside the truck, refusing to talk to the traffic police officers.
The man only gave in at the persuasion of his employer in Limpopo province.
He was arrested and charged for attempted murder and operating an un-roadworthy vehicle.
“On the following day, other Zimbabwean truck drivers contributed an amount of R4 000 and allegedly went to approach the traffic officer, who had arrested Moshayi to secure his release.
“It is further alleged that they initially promised to give R10 000. The traffic officer reported to the Hawks that he was being offered a bribe and a trap was set leading to Ncube’s arrest when he came to deliver the bribe money,” said Capt Sekgotodi. Herald

Fares Up As Fuel Shortages Worsen

By A Correspondent- Transport operators have hiked fares due to the worsening fuel shortages.

Transport operators hiked fares by over 100%, with a local route usually pegged at $60 now costs $200.

It has also resulted in the black market fuel resurfacing, with five litres going for US$12, up from US$7.
Last week, government said the fuel shortages were being caused by maintenance works at Beira in Mozambique.
Operators plying the Harare-Bulawayo route increased their fares from US$15 to US$25, while those plying rural routes also increased their fares.
The Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) yesterday warned unscrupulous operators, adding the unsanctioned increases were a cause of concern.
They urged government to intervene.
PAZ president Tafadzwa Goliath said: “Fares can only increase if there is a fuel hike, and also if government has approved it. People do not have money, they were affected by the COVID-19 lockdown, and they are still incapacitated. The operators should understand all this and be kind to the passengers.”
Goliath said transport operators should desist from taking advantage of passengers by sticking to their normal fares since salaries were too low, and they were already languishing in poverty.
However, he said some operators were forced to increase fares due to the high demand of transport sparked by the fuel shortages.
“Transporters overcharge commuters during the festive season due to demand. They also want to profit in anticipation of huge volumes of travellers during the festive season. But we don’t encourage the illegal hikes,” Goliath said.
He warned travellers against using private transport, adding that they should adhere to World Health Organisation set regulations and protocols to avoid contracting COVID-19.
Government last week said the fuel crisis was being addressed, adding that the situation would normalise beginning today. Motorists have, however, been hoarding the precious liquid in anticipation of a dry festive season. Newsday

New Post For Benjani Mwaruwari

Benjani Mwaruwari has been given a new mandate with the national U23s team.

The former Manchester City striker will take charge of the Young Warriors, replacing Tonderai Ndiraya.

Mwaruwari’s new job automatically places him as one of the three assistant coaches in the senior men’s national team set-up. This marks his return to the Warriors fold after his departure in September following the dissolution of the entire technical led by Zdravko Logarusic.

He will work under coach Norman Mapeza, who has renewed his contract ahead of the Afcon 2021 tournament next month.

The other two assistant coaches in the Warriors set-up are Taurai Mangwiro and Mandla Mpofu. – Soccer24 Zimbabwe

Khama Billiat announced his retirement from international football in November but efforts to convince him to reconsider his decision for the tournament are on.

The technical set-up consists of Norman Mapeza, Rodwell Dhlakama, Mandla Mpofu and Benjani Mwaruwari.

The team is set to depart for Cameroon on 29 December with the UK-based midfielder Marvelous Nakamba set to link up with the rest of the team after 3 January.

Nigeria Sack Coach Weeks Before AFCON

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the sacking of head coach Gernot Rohr just weeks before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Rohr had been in charge of the Super Eagles for three years. He leaves the West Africans after failing to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Former Nigeria national team captain Augustine Eguavoen will take over coaching duties on an interim basis.

A statement by the NFF reads: “The Nigeria Football Federation has appointed Mr Augustine Eguavoen, currently its Technical Director, as the Technical Adviser of the Super Eagles on an interim basis. This is with immediate effect, and follows the termination of the relationship with Franco-German Gernot Rohr, who has been in charge of the three –time African champions for the past 64 months, and is Nigeria’s longest –serving manager.

“Following a virtual meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on Sunday, it was decided that Eguavoen will work with Salisu Yusuf (Chief Coach); Paul Aigbogun (Assistant Coach); Joseph Yobo (Assistant Coach); Dr Terry Eguaoje (Assistant Coach) and Aloysius Agu (Goalkeeper Trainer).

Zemura, Bournemouth Contract Talks Frozen

The contract negotiations between Jordan Zemura and his club Bournemouth have been placed on hold until the end of the season.

The two parties held initial talks in October about the future of the Zimbabwean whose deal is expiring in June 2022.

However, according to coach Scott Parker, the negotiations have been frozen and will only resume when the campaign ends to avoid any distraction on the player’s performances.

The gaffer told the Bournemouth Daily Echo newspaper: “We’re parking it and will speak about that towards the end of the season.

“As it stands, at this moment in time, I think that’s best for everyone. I think that’s probably best for the two boys (Zemura and Jaidon Anthony) as well.

“I said on the onset of those negotiations, that I didn’t want it to go over a certain amount of time. I didn’t want them to be distracted.

“These are two young boys that are still striving to make a career and they’re still striving to make inroads.

“However well they’ve done, they’ve done well in half a season and the reason they’ve done so well is because their main focus has been football, football, football and a desperation to stay in a team and get in the team.

“That’s exactly where I want their heads to be.”

Full-back Zemura played every minute for Cherries in the Championship this season, before suffering an ankle injury in a 2-0 victory at Reading which has kept him out of action.

He is back at training and could be available for selection in the next games.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

STIs And Reproductive Health

“Khupe In Talks With President Chamisa For A Return To MDC Alliance”: Report

By A Correspondent- MDC-T deputy leader Thokozani Khupe is reportedly having talks with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa with the intention of joining the party.

ZimLive reports that talks between Khupe and MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa have caused ructions in the MDC-T which is reportedly planning to recall her from parliament. MDC-T has dismissed reports of a plot to recall her.

MDC-T insiders say Khupe never fully accepted her defeat at the December 2020 Congress which saw her losing the presidency to Douglas Mwonzora. ZimLive quotes an anonymous MDC Alliance official as saying:

The lines of communication between the Khupe and the MDC Alliance leadership are very open, and very busy.

Khupe’s growing disquiet opened a flank for Chamisa to woo her back into the fold as he bids to strengthen the MDC Alliance in Matabeleland, where Khupe remains a political force.

Chamisa has also reached out to other MDC founding leaders in Matabeleland including former chairman Lovemore Moyo and the former organising secretary Abednico Bhebhe, who joined him on his tour of Matabeleland South last month.

Chamisa’s spokesman Nkululeko Sibanda said Chamisa wants to lead this country and building a nation is not a partisan enterprise. He added:

His focus is to get every citizen to support change.

The MDC Alliance stands ready to welcome all comrades who underestimated Douglas Mwonzora’s complicity and connivance with the regime to frustrate change.

Khupe’s spokesman Ntando Ndlovu denied that she has held talks with the MDC Alliance. Ndlovu said:

Dr Khupe would like to place it on record that she has never held any discussions with any party about working together or anything of the sort.

These reports come after Khupe’s lawyers wrote to the MDC-T secretary-general Paurina Mupariwa on December 6 raising concerns about a resolution allegedly passed by the party’s national council to recall her and her supporters from parliament.

The lawyers claimed a national council meeting held on November 26 passed a resolution “to recall Dr Khupe and others from parliament and local authorities” and that the intended recalls “are due any time.”

MDC-T spokesman Witness Dube said:

It is entirely open for speculation why madam vice president Khupe would come out of a national council meeting only to seek an audience with her lawyers about what she calls plots to remove her from parliament.

He denied the alleged plot to recall members adding that the MDC-T, however, reserves the right to recall members who on various grounds including joining other political parties.

Dube denied the alleged plot to recall members.

ZimLive reports that MDC Alliance secretary-general Charlton Hwende has been the point person in discussions with Khupe, who has so far only spoken to Chamisa by phone.

ZRP Arrests Machete Gang Over Filabusi Murder

Mashurugwi machete

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has announced the arrest of a machete and spear-wielding gang over the murder that occurred in Filabusi last week.

The victim was reportedly assaulted for trespassing and died a few metres away from the scene after trying to escape. A police statement reads:

The ZRP confirms the arrest of Farai Mpunzi (40), Ndodana Sibanda (30), Mqondisi Sibanda (30), Aneli Sibanda (25), Obvious Nyoni (26) and Luckmore Ncube in connection with a case of murder that occurred at Bunyip Mine, Filabusi on 10/12/21 at around 1900hrs.

The six suspects, who were armed with machetes and spears, attacked Eric Mahlangu (22) over allegations of trespassing. One of the suspects stabbed the victim on the right thigh with a spear.

The victim tried to escape but collapsed and died a few metres from the scene of the crime.

Violence has been commonplace in mining towns, especially amongst artisanal miners, with some emanating from boundary disputes. In some instances, some machete-wielding gangs would just descend on mines with the intention of stealing the ore.

Dozens have been arrested since 2019 when there was a surge in crimes committed by machete-wielding gangs

“Covid-19 Booster Shots Should Be Taken 9months After Vaccination”: Indian Council Of Medical Research

By A Correspondent- The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed a Parliamentary committee that COVID-19 booster doses should be taken after nine months of full vaccination.

India Today reports that the ICMR chief Balram Bhargava claimed that a booster shot can be given nine months after both doses of the Covid vaccine have been administered.

While in a recent study, a team of ICMR scientists suggested the use of the Covishield COVID-19 vaccine as a booster shot, noting a reduction in efficacy against the Delta derivatives. An excerpt from the paper reads:

Our findings suggest that the Covishield vaccine was able to neutralize Delta derivatives and prevent serious disease and fatality among breakthrough cases. A booster dose vaccination of Covid-19 naïve vaccinees would achieve a protective immune response to fight against emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

Speaking on booster doses, India’s Health Minister Mansukh Mandavia said they have two expert groups in the country, who advise them on vaccination.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe has already started administering booster doses for frontline workers and citizens with chronic diseases.

A booster shot occurs when a vaccinated individual is further jabbed to increase their immunity.

Police Launch Manhunt For 5yr Old Baby Killer

By A Correspondent- The police are investigating a suspected murder case after the remains of a five-year-old girl were found scattered on Nyanga mountain on Friday.

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says the deceased was reported on 4 December while in the company of an unnamed 38-year-old male who is a suspect in the case.

Zanu PF Extends $100 Million To Mwonzora

By A Correspondent-The Zanu PF government has announced that it has set aside $500 million for MDC-T President Douglas Mwonzora and Emmerson Mnangagwa in Political Party Funding.

The money would be shared based on the number of constituency seats in the National Assembly.
According to Treasury’s blue book, which goes into the ultra-fine detail of how the Budget is spent, qualifying political parties have been allocated $500 million, with the threshold being five percent of the total votes in a general election.

Only Zanu PF and MDC-T led by Senator Douglas Mwonzora qualify.
Zanu PF is set to get away with the largest share of the money given that it enjoys a comfortable two thirds majority in the National Assembly.
A rough calculation depicts that Zanu PF will get almost $400 million while MDC-T will pocket at least $100 million.
The Mwonzora-led MDC-T assumed the status of official opposition after the Supreme Court nullified in a civil case the elevation of MDC-Alliance leader Mr Nelson Chamisa to the party leadership.

The court had to work with the MDC-T’s own constitution in the civil action, and found that under that party’s own rules Mr Chamisa was not the party leader.
The party was told to run a proper congress under its own rules to settle its leadership, and that was won by Senator Mwonzora who took over from Dr Thokozani Khupe who was the interim leader following the law suit.
The finding in a High Court civil suit that the MDC-Alliance was simply an electoral pact, not a proper political party that had superceded the parties that formed the pact, allowed the MDC-T to insist that those successful legislators and councillors nominated by the MDC-T in the pact lists had to either accept the legal position of the MDC-T or be recalled.
Since then, the MDC-T has been receiving the opposition share of the Government funding under the Political Parties Finance Act.
Government promulgated Political Parties Finance Act after it emerged that some opposition parties were receiving funding from foreign governments and organisations as party of covert operations to achieve regime change.
Political parties can now receive lawful funding through Government grants under the Act, sale of party cards, fundraising activities and from its members.

Government has since gazetted the Private Voluntary Organisation’s Amendment Bill that prohibits Non Government Organisation’s from campaigning for political parties or candidates.
The Bill, now before Parliament and is set to be subjected to public hearing by Parliament came after it emerged that civic society and NGOs were being used as conduits for illegal activities by some political parties and hostile foreign agencies.

Top Army General In Adultery Storm

By A Correspondent-Matabeleland South provincial development coordinator, Latiso Dlamini has been ordered to pay about half a million Zimbabwe dollars in damages in a case where she was sued for engaging in an adulterous affair with an army general.

Siboniso Lesley Maseko (nee Gumede) filed a lawsuit against Dlamini in December 2019 accusing her of having a love affair with her husband Brigadier General Simo Maseko.
Siboniso, who said their marriage was solemnised in terms of Chapter 5:11 of the Marriages Act on December 20, 1998 claimed $500 000 in damages in her lawsuit.
Dlamini filed opposing papers challenging the lawsuit through her lawyers Dube-Banda, Nzarayapenga and Partners.
In her defence, Dlamini said she was not aware that the army general was married.
Bulawayo High Court Judge Justice Maxwell Takuva last week ruled against Dlamini.
“Defendant has not indicated what she considers to be a reasonable and fair award in the circumstances.
“However, defendant has conceded that the level of damages must be in line with previous awards and guides in similar cases,” Takuva said.
“In the circumstances, I find that plaintiff has suffered damages for contummelia in the sum of $200 000 and loss of comfort, society and companionship of her husband in the sum of $200 000.
“Accordingly, it is ordered that the defendant pays to the plaintiff $400 000 being (a) $200 000 damages for contummelia and (b) $200 000 for loss of consortium.
“Interest of 5% per annum from date of summons to date of full payment..”
Siboniso said she discovered that Dlamini and her husband had been seeing each other since 2017.
Court papers show that Maseko had portrayed himself as a divorcee after producing a divorce certificate from a previous marriage.
“Despite knowledge of their marriage and demands for her to discontinue with her adulterous relationship with plaintiff’s husband, the defendant has nonetheless persisted.
“As a result, the plaintiff has suffered damages for contummelia in the sum of $200 000 and loss of comfort, society and companionship of her husband in the sum of $200 000,” the summons read in part.
In her plea, Dlamini argued an adultery lawsuit was outdated.
“The defendant’s starting point is that a claim for damages for adultery is outdated and a strain to the constitutions in the world.
“Defendant listed a number of countries where the claim has been abolished or restricted.”
After Dlamini was sued for adultery damages, Maseko filed a divorce against his wife of 21 years arguing that he had lost affection having been in separation for three years.
In divorce papers before the court, the top soldier said their marriage had irretrievably broken down such that there were no prospects of restoring it to a normal relationship.
During the subsistence of the marriage, the parties acquired both movable and immovable properties, which include two houses located in Bulawayo and Gweru, two cars, a Mazda B1800 and a Forton double cab, 70 cattle, 30 goats and household property.
He wants the property to be distributed equitably in the event that the divorce sails through, 60% market value of the Bulawayo house donated to his daughter with the Gweru property going to his other daughter from a previous marriage.
He wants to retain their Mazda B1800, 55 cows and 20 goats.

Dumped Man Posts Wife Nudes On Social Media

By A Correspondent-A woman from Pumula South suburb has obtained a protection order against her former husband, who habitually posts her nude images on social media and physically assaults her.

Thabeth Moyo (36) separated from her husband Mandla Nkolomi (39) and went to live with her parents.

However, Nkolomi would visit Moyo and demand to be intimate with her and when she refuses, he would hurl unprintable words at her.

Nkolomi insists on being intimate with his ex-wife telling her that he paid lobola and she was still his wife because their eight-year marriage has not been formally dissolved.

He forcibly took her phone and sent all her nude images to his phone. Nkolomi is now posting her nudes on Facebook and WhatsApp.

Moyo said when her ex-husband’s friends see her with any man, they would inform him and then he would phone her, and call her a prostitute. In her founding affidavit, Moyo said:

I have been married to Mandla Nkolomi for the past eight years. We separated in May this year because he was physically, verbally and psychologically abusing me. I’m now staying with my parents.

He usually comes to my parents’ place and demands to sleep with me. When I refuse he would become angry and would assault me with fists.

He took my phone and is now sending my nude pictures on WhatsApp groups and Facebook to ruin my reputation. He is also in the habit of shouting obscenities at me.

Magistrate Jeconia Prince Ncube granted Moyo a protection order against her former husband.

She ordered Nkolomi not to physically, verbally and psychologically abuse Moyo and to stop sending her images on WhatsApp groups and Facebook.

Bulawayo School Expels 5 Pupils Over Bullying

By A Correspondent- Green Gables High School, a private school on the outskirts of Bulawayo has reportedly expelled five pupils who were involved in fights and bullying in the past few weeks.

The school head, a Mr Mugawa declined to comment but sources at the institution confirmed that the school had to take the drastic measure after numerous reports of bullying were reported.
Director Advocacy and Communication in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Mr Taungana Ndoro said the problem was being handled through the Learner Welfare, Psychological Services and Special Needs Department.
“We have over 9 778 schools in the country and every school has an incident register. This problem is being handled through robust guidance and counselling services by our Learner Welfare, Psychological Services and Special Needs

Department. Violence and bullying occurs because of different traumas and anxieties that learners may be facing,” he said.
Sources, however, told Sunday News that five pupils were initially suspended for two weeks with four of them currently facing assault charges for severely bashing the fifth pupil, who has also been expelled.
The source said parents are angry over how the school is being run and are calling for the dismissal of the head.
Problems at the school came to light when four boys assaulted another until he needed hospitalisation overnight.

According to medical records seen by this publication, the victim had a swollen face, scalp laceration, 2cm x 0.5cm raccoon eye, swollen feet as well as bruises on the back and shoulders.
The medical report also read that the injuries could have been caused by a blunt instrument. The degree of force used to inflict the injuries was severe.
The injuries caused were serious and posed “potential danger to life” because the head injuries suffered are associated with intracranial bleeding, but no permanent disability is expected to result from the assault.
The source said the boys were all expelled on Monday when they appeared before the school headmaster having served their suspensions.
Issues with the headmaster’s handling of this and other cases came to a head when he allowed the four attackers to remain in school during their suspension, but refused the victim the same privilege.
“Parents began to question the headmaster’s sincerity in the matter when he allowed the four boys who had brutally attacked their school mate to be at school during their two-week suspension but refused to allow their victim the same opportunity,” revealed the source.

The source said until the publication of the incident in last Sunday’s edition of this publication, most parents were not aware of the violence that has become regular at the school.
It is reported that they have been making frantic efforts to get clarity regarding the safety of their children while also accusing the headmaster of favouritism.
The headmaster allegedly tried to sweep the four boys’ assault of the Lower Sixth pupil under the carpet until it became clear that medical attention was required.
It is believed that only after the victim was taken to Pelandaba Clinic and a doctor in attendance had recommended that the boy be transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital where a police report was required did details of the incident come to light.
One parent who spoke to Sunday News said they were worried about the manner in which the headmaster handles matters to do with violence at the school. She said the headmaster had shown favouritism with impunity.

$500 Million For Mwonzora & Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent-Zanu PF and MDC-T will next year share the $500 million Treasury allocated under the Political Parties Finance Act with the split based on the number of constituency seats in the National Assembly.

Mai Titi’s Obina Has A Baby.

By Showbiz Reporter | The man previously engaged to the comedian Mai Titi, only identified as Obina, has been pictured with a child on his back.

Social media users suggested the baby is his with some asking how so quick considering he separated with Felistas Murata a few months ago. A closer check will reveal that by March, he was no longer with her meaning the possibility of fathering a child is very high, as he could have crossed floors last year.

The two were engaged for nearly a year after the socialite had jumped from the now UK based Zizoe, and before trying her luck on a popular Congolese singer. She was unsuccessful and then tried to smear his reputation only to be humiliated on live camera by her own witnesses, she was hoping would back her sensational allegations.

A comment from Obina could not be obtained at the time of writing.

Mnangagwa Targets Mugabe Loyalists’ Farms

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has targeted farms that the former President Robert Mugabe loyalists own.

The state media Sunday reported that Mnangagwa had identified more than 220 000 such farms for repossession.

Sources said Mnangagwa was using the Zimbabwe Land Commission to pretend as if they are carrying out a land audit to justify the repossession of these farms.

The state media said the Zimbabwe Land Commission (ZLC) had deployed teams of auditors to probe and locate these farms.

Mugabe, Kasukuwere Images Dominate Zanu PF WhatsApp Groups

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF supporters reportedly put former President Robert Mugabe and the party’s former national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere images on their WhatsApp groups.

Kasukuwere relocated to South Africa in the aftermath of the November 2017 military coup that toppled Mugabe and replaced him with Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Tyson, as he is also known, has been linked to a plan to challenge Mnangagwa in the 2023 general elections, a move that has reportedly polarised Zanu PF structures.

A party insider told The Standard that secretary for war veterans Douglas Mahiya a fortnight ago told party members that a decision had been taken to suspend anyone, who will be found having links to Kasukuwere.

Mahiya made the announcement during a meeting that was to announce the elevation of Harare Provincial Affairs minister, Oliver Chidawu into the politburo at the ruling party’s Harare headquarters. Said an unnamed party official:

There is a memo advising party structures that anyone, who is found supporting Kasukuwere will be suspended from the party.

Mahiya told party structures that anyone found with Kasukuwere’s picture on their WhatsApp status or party group icons will be suspended. This also included Mugabe’s picture.

The party wants to dilute Kasukuwere’s perceived support base in the ruling Zanu PF party.

It was made clear that all meetings should denounce Kasukuwere and the G40 cabal without fail and anyone who is seen posting pictures of him, even with Mugabe in that picture, should face disciplinary action.

Mahiya is said to have taken the same message to other provinces to try to destroy Kasukuwere’s perceived support within the party structures.

Reports indicate that Zanu PF is using mostly 2014 party structures that worked with Kasukuwere as the commissar.

800 Drug Addicts Admitted

By A Correspondent- OVER 800 drug addicts have been admitted into rehabilitation centres this year after developing mental disorders associated with drug abuse, official data shows.

Statistics obtained from the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Drug and Substance Abuse show that the CID Drugs and Narcotics Unit has arrested over 1 150 alleged criminals for drug-related offences this year.

Police have also recovered drugs, including the highly addictive crystal methamphetamine, cocaine and ecstasy, valued at over $2 million.

The high-level committee was set up by President Mnangagwa earlier this year after realising the negative effects drugs were having on society. Co-chair of the committee, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Secretary Mr Simon Masanga, told The Sunday Mail that Government was rolling out several interventions to curb drug abuse among young people.
“A Drug and Substance Abuse Unit has been set up and social development officers have been seconded to establish the unit whilst the Ministry awaits approval from the Public Service Commission to create a dedicated and official establishment to that end,” he said.
“Provision of psycho-social support (PSS) and other services is currently on-going at the Department of Social Development district offices.
“The Ministry of Social Welfare is in the process of establishing its first pilot in-house PSS Centre dedicated to drug and substance abuse in Harare Province within the DSD district offices. Identification, referral and case management of children through the National Case Management System is on-going and children identified are referred to appropriate services per need.”

According to the committee’s progress report, police arrested 192 drug dealers and 383 users between January and October.
The CID Narcotics Unit also recovered 343 grammes of crystal meth worth $328 946, about 4,32 grammes of cocaine valued at $109 000 and 36 ecstasy tablets worth $37 000.
In addition, 53,98 kilogrammes of dagga valued at $1,2 million were also recovered, while 1 772 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup worth $648 000 were also impounded over the same period. Police also recovered huge volumes of Adco-Saltarpyn, an analgesic medication containing codeine, Benylin and Histalix cough syrups.

Full Report On Demonstrations Against Mnangagwa Presence At COP26

Anna Machaya Hubby Has Vanished

The Johanne Masowe apostolic sect member, Hatirarame Momberume, who was dragged before the courts to face murder and rape charges after he married a minor, Anna Machaya who died while giving birth, has reportedly disappeared.

His lawyer, Brian Majamanda of Khupe and Chijara Law Chambers told NewsDay that he did not know the whereabouts of his client, who was issued with a warrant of arrest last week after he skipped his first trial session.

Machaya died on July 15 this year during labour at a church shrine in Marange, Manicaland province.

Momberume was recently granted $50 000 bail by High Court judge Justice Isaac Muzenda before a trial date was set.

However, Momberume failed to turn up in court last week, resulting in a warrant of arrest being issued against him by acting Mutare provincial magistrate Richard Ramaboea.

Majamanda, his lawyer, showed up at the courts alone.

“Currently, we don’t know his whereabouts (Momberume). He has a warrant of arrest issued on him. I will give you more feedback tomorrow (today), I have been trying to call him, but his phone is not reachable,” the lawyer said.

According to the State, Momberume unlawfully caused the death of Machaya by failing to take her to a medical facility to receive medical care during labour.

Mombeume, instead, took Machaya to the Johanne Marange sect’s midwives, where she delivered, but died after complications.

He hid the news of Machaya’s death and proceeded to bury her without notifying authorities.

In order to cover up for the offence, he allegedly claimed that the person who had died was Memory Machaya, born on January 2, 1999.

Investigations later revealed that the person married to the accused was, indeed, Anna, a minor, leading to his arrest.- Newsday

Normal Rainfall Coming

The country will still receive normal to above normal rainfall this summer season despite most areas recording low rainfall so far.

The Meteorological Service Department (MSD) yesterday said while its seasonal projections points to normal to above normal rains, some areas in the country have received below normal rains but that does not change the seasonal indicators.

It said the country should receive improved rainfall this week.

At the end of August, MSD projected that the 2021/22 rainy season will be characterised by good rains.

But the rains have not been coming in some parts of the country while the hot weather conditions have persisted.

The hot weather conditions have seen some crops suffering from moisture stress and some farmers who had already planted may be forced to replant.

Most farmers are anticipating a good farming season as was recorded in the previous season which saw the country recording a bumper harvest.

Government has already started distributing inputs to ensure that farmers adequately prepare for the planting season.

The normal to above normal seasonal projections, has seen Government activating its disaster response mechanism to avert rain related disasters.

The Civil Protection Unit (CPU) recently revealed that it requires US$100 million to adequately prepare for rain related disasters.

MSD divided its season forecast into two halves: the October to December and the January and March period.

In an interview yesterday, MSD Agro Meteorologist in charge of season forecast Mr Benjamin Kwenda, said nothing has changed in terms of their seasonal forecast despite little rains being received so far.

“Our projections have not changed and at the moment we are monitoring the situation until at the end of the three months which marks the end of the first half of the season.

We cannot do a review before the end of the three months. So, we will do an update at the end of the three months but when we did an update last week, there was no change to the indicators,” said Mr Kwenda.

“We still have indicators that we are likely to get heavy rains that are short. And we could be headed for some kind of disasters within the time that remains until the end of December.

But at the moment we have not reached a point where we can say we can make that proper assessment of the three months because as long as we are still within the three months anything can happen.”

He said the country in the 2019/20 recorded a similar situation where rains seemed not to come until it was hit by a devastating Cyclone Idai.

“A good example of what is happening is in the 2019/20 season when we experienced Cyclone Idai. We had a situation which is almost similar to what we are having now (little rains).

But when the cyclone came it changed everything that we had initially predicted is what actually transpired.

Because it happened in a four-day period it was disastrous.

So, we still have the possibility of that happening. So, we will still track until we get to the end of the month and when we get to the end of the month, we will then make an assessment on what could have actually happened that changed everything else,” he said.

Mr Kwenda said areas such as Beitbridge among other areas have received significant rains.

“Our projection was saying normal to above normal so we still have quite a number of areas that are still below normal and we have the areas that have the normal to above normal category.

Basing on our last report, areas around Beitbridge have received slightly above normal rains but we still have some places which have received below normal rains in contradiction to the season projections,” said Mr Kwenda.

He said the country should expect improved rainfall this week and conditions are still favouring a good rainy season.

“That is very true. We are expecting some rains in some places from tomorrow (today) but in other areas from Tuesday going into the week.

So, we expect them to be quite significant and from around Wednesday they should cover the whole country. We are definitely still expecting some significant rains.

Even when we are looking at the other indicators, everything else has developed into conditions where we are expecting La-Nina conditions and La-Nina bring favourable conditions for us.

So, we are still in a La-Nina season,” he said. -Chronicle

Civil Society Blasts Mnangagwa

CIVIL society organisations (CSOs) yesterday said President Emmerson Mnangagwa had failed to honour his November 2017 pledge to uphold human rights and promote good governance, as he continues to further shrink the democratic space in the country.

This came out yesterday as local civic groups joined the rest of the world in commemorating International Human Rights Day.

This year’s commemorations were held under the theme: Equality: Reducing Inequalities and Advancing Human Rights.

Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) spokesperson Marvelous Kumalo speaking on behalf of over 350 civic groups said Mnangagwa had failed to address the country’s toxic political environment and marginalisation of minority ethnic groups since he took over power through a military coup in November 2017.

“A toxic political environment coupled with high levels of corruption remain some of the major factors contributing towards inequality, with the government discriminating citizens along political party lines,” Kumalo said.

“Despite claims of a new dispensation, Mnangagwa’s government has a tainted human rights record and as such, has failed to put human rights at the centre of its development initiatives,” he added.

He said the draconian laws, judicial capture, arbitrary arrests, persecution of civil society actors and the ongoing arbitrary constitutional amendments continue to reverse the democratic gains attained by the adoption of a new Constitution in 2013.

Southern Defenders, a membership organisation of CSOs from across southern Africa, called upon governments in the region to respect, promote and protect all internationally recognised and constitutionally-guaranteed human rights and fundamental freedoms.

“Southern Defenders urge governments in the region to safeguard the online and offline civic, democratic and civil society space. Ramaphosa Tests Positive A Week After Ghana Trip

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa is receiving treatment for mild COVID-19 symptoms after testing positive for the viral infection today, Sunday, 12 December 2021.

Ramaphosa started feeling unwell after leaving the State Memorial Service in honour of former Deputy President FW de Klerk in Cape Town earlier today, Sunday, a minister in his office announced.

The President is in good spirits but is being monitored by the South African Military Health Service of the South African National Defence Force, the statement read.

Ramaphosa is twiced jabbed.

He is in self-isolation in Cape Town and has delegated all responsibilities to Deputy President David Mabuza for the next week, the presidential statement further announced.

On his recent visit to four West African states, President Ramaphosa and the South African delegation were tested for COVID-19 in all countries.

The President and the delegation returned to South Africa from the Republic of Senegal on Wednesday, 8 December 2021, after obtaining negative test results. The President also tested negative on his return to Johannesburg on 8 December.

Today’s proceedings in Cape Town were undertaken in compliance with health regulations pertaining to hand hygiene, the wearing of
face masks and social distancing.

President Ramaphosa says his own infection serves as a caution to all people in the country to be vaccinated and remain vigilant against exposure.

Vaccination remains the best protection against severe illness and hospitalisation.

People who have had contact with the President today are advised to watch for symptoms or to have themselves tested

Mnangagwa To Impose Mandatory Vaccination?

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has warned members of the public that if vaccine uptake remains low, the Government will be left with no option but to make vaccination against COVID-19 mandatory.

Mnangagwa made the remarks on Saturday in Uzumba where he attended the memorial of the late former prisons boss Paradzai Zimondi.

Posting on Twitter this Saturday, presidential spokesperson George Charamba said the Government is targetting universal vaccination, not the initial target of attaining herd immunity. Wrote Charamba:

The President urged all Zimbabweans to step forward for anti-COVID-19 jabs which the Government is administering free of charge.

He warned that if Government realised that not many people were coming forward for voluntary vaccination, Govt might have to consider mandatory vaccination in order to save lives.

Zimbabwe’s goal was universal vaccination and not the initial herd immunity targeting jabs for 60% of the population.

Zimondi, whose Chimurenga name was Tonderai Nyika, alongside cabinet ministers Perrance Shiri and Joel Biggie Matiza succumbed to COVID-19 and the three were buried on the same day at the National Heroes Acre.

Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation (WHO) recently warned against mandatory vaccinations unless all other options have been exhausted. – Pindula News

Woman Forces Self On Neighbour’s Son

A 46-year-old woman from Rusape recently molested a 15-year-old boy during the night at her home after restraining him from going back home on the pretext that it was too dark.

The woman, Charity Muwereka of Plot 8, Nyamwari Farm, this week appeared before Rusape magistrate, Obedience Matare facing one count of aggravated indecent assault.

Muwereka is a neighbour to the complainant. On November 1, the complainant penned their cattle at Plot 9, Nyamwari Farm which is about 100 meters from Muwereka’s place.

Muwereka called the teenager and asked him to fix the lighting system in her bedroom. After fixing the lighting system, Muwereka told the teenager that it was no longer safe for him to go home since it was dark.

She told the teenager to sleep with her eight-year-old son in the dining room. Muwereka slept in the bedroom with her two daughters.

Later during the night, the complainant woke up to discover that Muwereka was sexually abusing him.

The teenager asked Muwereka what she was doing, but she told him not to tell anyone.

Muwereka continued sexually molesting the teenager for about five minutes before going back to her bedroom.

According to the prosecutor, the teenager went back home the following morning but could not tell her mother what had happened at Muwereka’s place. Instead, he started crying.

His mother took him to a local member of the ZRP’s Neighborhood Watch Committee, Abel Mushayabasa where he narrated what had transpired at the suspect’s place the previous night.

The boy said he could not tell her mother what had taken place as he was afraid that she could give him a thorough beating.- The Manica Post

Civic Groups Condemn Violation Of Human Rights By Mnangagwa Administration

A country which respects human rights has better prospects of engineering inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” Southern Defenders team leader Washington Katema said.

“The leaders in southern Africa and beyond should demonstrate the political will to foster a culture of human rights in their respective countries. This is also time to move from survival rights to free expression rights. Our people deserve the full menu of rights.”

MAVAZA: THOMAS MAPFUMO BETRAYS HIS COUNTRY

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | His name has become the Zimbabwean term for “traitor.” He’s the country’s own Judas, a man who sold out his country and his cause for a handful of silver. Or maybe he is an invincible warrior who finally exposes a fatal weakness.

Thomas Mapfumo

The story of Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo lends itself to classic drama. He might have been the hero of the Revolution, exhibiting immense courage and leadership in songs and poems.

Thomas Mapfumo was imprisoned without charges under the white-dominated regime of Rhodesia. He enjoyed the hero status after independence taking the poll position as a great singer in the country and region. Mapfumo mingled himself in crime and he was hounded by the law. He lived in self exile in the United States for two decades, and in April 2018, returned to Zimbabwe for the first time since 2005 to perform a concert. Despite his treasonous utterances Mapfumo was never arrested. The new dispensation allowed him a free passage. He was to be seen at the funeral of another icon Mutukudzi.

Mapfumo’s songs kept the Revolution alive. But after becoming broke and out of touch with reality he later turned traitor, almost managing to hand over the nation to the Western world he had fought viciously before.

Popular opinion has simply exiled him as a “bad” man not worth thinking much about.

Thomas Tafirenyika Mapfumo (born July 3, 1945)[1] is a musician nicknamed “The Lion of Zimbabwe” and “Mukanya” for his immense popularity and for the political influence he wields through his music. He both created and made popular Chimurenga music, and his slow-moving style and distinctive voice is instantly recognisable to Zimbabweans.

But now his legacy is being marred in controversy. Mapfumo has managed to crush his legacy and carelessly chuck it in the bin.
Mapfumo’s story has much more complexity than most people realize, he is a good example of from hero to zero. From a patriot to a traitor. What exactly is a traitor? A traitor is one who betrays another’s trust or is false to an obligation or duty, one who commits treason Mapfumo has been called a traitor to the zimbabwe’s cause.

It is no doubt that Mapfumo has
betrayed beliefs that he used to hold, or that his friends hold, by his words and actions.
Thomas Mapfumo is one who betrays one’s country, a cause, or a trust, especially one who commits treason.

Zimbabwe today has very little appetite for complex thinking. We see good or evil, black or white. You’re for us or against us. Mapfumo has shown all that he is against us as a country and he has become a traitor.

Last week Thomas Mapfumo spoke an incitement to the young people of Zimbabwe saying they must not allow their destiny to be run by criminals.

While on his South Africa tour, Mapfumo spoke with a voice full of malice aforethoughts saying the people’s Kingdom is on earth not in the afterlife, for which purpose they must seize the moment before it’s too late. This was not only blasphemous but treasonous.

“Down here on earth is where your Kingdom is.

Down here on earth is where our Kingdom is located, so if we fail to eat with others, while others go hungry, that’s not what we want…Get out of your houses, and remove these scarfed people, because they’re the ones making you poor“ Mapfumo said in direct reference to the President Mnangagwa’s trademark scarf in national colours.
The utterances by Mapfumo are seditious and indeed inciting the youth to a rebellious outfit.

Mapfumo has fallen from grace and its sad he falters at a very old age. It is not clear if Mapfumo has been struck by a bolt of dementia. He now exercises his verbal diarrhoea. His careless talk is dangerous and indeed criminal.

He was by far the most successful motivator during the war. He had a messianic following among his fans and his country. Mapfumo’s story shows that “life is much more complex. Indeed, “complex” and “fascinating” seem to be popular adjectives used to describeMapfumo but disgusting is the description given by those who’ve looked closely at his life.

Mapfumo was a fearless warrior and a self-made man who supported the cause of freedom financially as well as on the battlefield. The mystery of why he became a traitor is what makes baffles all.
Mapfumo said “Remove them; chase them out because they are the ones making you poor. If you keep silent fearing death, it’s going to fail on your side; You are going to spend the next 100 years. As for us, we’ll be gone.”

This was promoting people into violence. It is not a revolutionary speech but a speech of a lunatic who is lost and yearning for blood.
Mapfumo has gone broke and he is seeking relevance with those who host him. He is to be seen as an outspoken speaker against the Zimbabwean government. Mapfumo is no-longer getting the large audiences he used to get. His life style has changed.

His circumstances are now different. It simply says these are the circumstances that sometimes produce the most extraordinary and contradictory forms of human behavior. Someone who has [nearly] given his life fighting for Zimbabwe independence ends up trying to put an end to Zimbabwean independence. How does that happen?” It is a tragedy.

There is a sharp contrast between a real hero and a traitor like Thomas Mapfumo n
In the end, the contrast between Mapfumo and a true hero is very clear. It is a question of honour and patriotism. When a hero encountered a problem, he ask himself, ‘What is good for the country?’ When a traitor like Mapfumo encountered a problem, it’s ‘What is good for me?’
“The comparison of those two personalities shows the difference between what we would like to think of as the Zimbabwean spirit.
Thomas Mapfumo is the hero who has gone rogue.

On September 21, 1780, Revolutionary War hero Benedict Arnold turned his back on his country in a secret meeting with a top British official. So how did Arnold, with his patriot’s pedigree, become the most hated man in America?

Zimbabwe is in no doubt as to Why Thomas Mapfumo became a traitor: greed; mounting debt; resentment of other singers a hatred of the nation Zimbabwe and a desire for the colonies to remain under British rule.

In criminal law, incitement is the encouragement of another person to commit a crime. Depending on the jurisdiction, some or all types of incitement may be illegal. Where illegal, it is known as an inchoate offense, where harm is intended but may or may not have actually occurred. ..
Thomas Mapfumo is inciting not for anybody’s benefit but for his own pocket. It is shameful for a man of his stature to stoop so low just for his supper.

Mapfumo has been overtaken by events. Zimbabwe has moved steps ahead. We are now in a new dispensation and things have changed. Mapfumo has to grow up and wake up.
We change governments by votes and not by violence.
Zimbabwe says to Mapfumo Shame on you.

Galloway Speaks On Missing AFCON Tournament

Brendan Galloway says he is devastated after suffering an injury which pulled him out of the coming Afcon 2021.

The 25-year-old was stretchered off in last month’s Plymouth Argyle’s 3-0 loss to Wycombe Wanderers after sustaining a knee injury.

He had an operation to repair a torn patellar tendon in London last week and will not be able to play in the next six to eight months.

The medical issue completely ruled him out of the Afcon competition scheduled to start on January 9 in Cameroon.

Reacting to the setback, Galloway posted on Instagram: “I’m devastated with the injury.

“Man, this season I was enjoying ball like never before. I was playing with the confidence that my manager, team mates and Argyle fans had given me.

“I was excited to put the shirt on every game, I was excited to represent my country at AFCON in January. God had a different plan, I trust that, and will never doubt that.

Current Information About Omicron Variant

On 26 November 2021, WHO designated the variant B.1.1.529 a variant of concern, named Omicron, on the advice of WHO’s Technical Advisory Group on Virus Evolution (TAG-VE). This decision was based on the evidence presented to the TAG-VE that Omicron has several mutations that may have an impact on how it behaves, for example, on how easily it spreads or the severity of illness it causes. Here is a summary of what is currently known.

Current knowledge about Omicron

Researchers in South Africa and around the world are conducting studies to better understand many aspects of Omicron and will continue to share the findings of these studies as they become available.

Transmissibility: It is not yet clear whether Omicron is more transmissible (e.g., more easily spread from person to person) compared to other variants, including Delta. The number of people testing positive has risen in areas of South Africa affected by this variant, but epidemiologic studies are underway to understand if it is because of Omicron or other factors.

Severity of disease: It is not yet clear whether infection with Omicron causes more severe disease compared to infections with other variants, including Delta. Preliminary data suggests that there are increasing rates of hospitalization in South Africa, but this may be due to increasing overall numbers of people becoming infected, rather than a result of specific infection with Omicron. There is currently no information to suggest that symptoms associated with Omicron are different from those from other variants. Initial reported infections were among university students—younger individuals who tend to have more mild disease—but understanding the level of severity of the Omicron variant will take days to several weeks. All variants of COVID-19, including the Delta variant that is dominant worldwide, can cause severe disease or death, in particular for the most vulnerable people, and thus prevention is always key.

Effectiveness of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection

Preliminary evidence suggests there may be an increased risk of reinfection with Omicron (ie, people who have previously had COVID-19 could become reinfected more easily with Omicron), as compared to other variants of concern, but information is limited. More information on this will become available in the coming days and weeks.

Effectiveness of vaccines: WHO is working with technical partners to understand the potential impact of this variant on our existing countermeasures, including vaccines. Vaccines remain critical to reducing severe disease and death, including against the dominant circulating variant, Delta. Current vaccines remain effective against severe disease and death.

Effectiveness of current tests: The widely used PCR tests continue to detect infection, including infection with Omicron, as we have seen with other variants as well. Studies are ongoing to determine whether there is any impact on other types of tests, including rapid antigen detection tests.

Effectiveness of current treatments: Corticosteroids and IL6 Receptor Blockers will still be effective for managing patients with severe COVID-19. Other treatments will be assessed to see if they are still as effective given the changes to parts of the virus in the Omicron variant.

Studies underway

At the present time, WHO is coordinating with a large number of researchers around the world to better understand Omicron. Studies currently underway or underway shortly include assessments of transmissibility, severity of infection (including symptoms), performance of vaccines and diagnostic tests, and effectiveness of treatments.

WHO encourages countries to contribute the collection and sharing of hospitalized patient data through the WHO COVID-19 Clinical Data Platform to rapidly describe clinical characteristics and patient outcomes.

More information will emerge in the coming days and weeks. WHO’s TAG-VE will continue to monitor and evaluate the data as it becomes available and assess how mutations in Omicron alter the behaviour of the virus.

Recommended actions for countries

As Omicron has been designated a Variant of Concern, there are several actions WHO recommends countries to undertake, including enhancing surveillance and sequencing of cases; sharing genome sequences on publicly available databases, such as GISAID; reporting initial cases or clusters to WHO; performing field investigations and laboratory assessments to better understand if Omicron has different transmission or disease characteristics, or impacts effectiveness of vaccines, therapeutics, diagnostics or public health and social measures. More detail in the announcement from 26 November.

Countries should continue to implement the effective public health measures to reduce COVID-19 circulation overall, using a risk analysis and science-based approach. They should increase some public health and medical capacities to manage an increase in cases. WHO is providing countries with support and guidance for both readiness and response.

In addition, it is vitally important that inequities in access to COVID-19 vaccines are urgently addressed to ensure that vulnerable groups everywhere, including health workers and older persons, receive their first and second doses, alongside equitable access to treatment and diagnostics.

Recommended actions for people

The most effective steps individuals can take to reduce the spread of the COVID-19 virus is to keep a physical distance of at least 1 metre from others; wear a well-fitting mask; open windows to improve ventilation; avoid poorly ventilated or crowded spaces; keep hands clean; cough or sneeze into a bent elbow or tissue; and get vaccinated when it’s their turn.

WHO will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available, including following meetings of the TAG-VE. In addition, information will be available on WHO’s digital and social media platforms. –

Unpacking Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s Brutality

Java Foods Ltd Penetrates The Regional Market

By A Correspondent- A leading Zambian food processor has penetrated the regional markets after successfully exporting its noodles to Zimbabwe and Malawi.

Java Foods Limited are manufacturers of “eeZee noodles” which have been on Zimbabwean shop shelves since November 2020.

In an interview in Lusaka, Zambia, with Lusaka Times, Java Foods founder and chief executive officer Monica Musonda disclosed that sales volumes of its famous ‘eeZee noodles’ brand are already hitting one million packets. She said:

Java Foods business strategy and rollout in Zambia was influenced by a number of factors.

Firstly, Zambia is self-sufficient in wheat, yet locally we use wheat only for bread and confectionery.

So there was an opportunity to introduce new products using wheat.

Secondly, a young (youthful) urban population and changing consumption patterns meant more people were looking for convenience ready-to-eat, affordable meals.

We started off in Zimbabwe in November 2020 and Java Foods signed a distribution agreement with Tulips Distribution Limited.

The product has done very well; consumer demand has grown and we have sold almost a million packets into that market.

The Zimbabwean consumer is quite progressive, willing to try new products.

Noodles have been in that market for some time now but it does seem that they like eeZee Noodles because of its high quality and our greatly localized taste and flavour.

She explained how Java has successfully pushed into regional markets such as Zimbabwe and Malawi. Said Musonda:

Primarily because we cannot create Java Foods in every country around us, you have to really work through partnerships with people who already distribute products in their local market.

And it’s important to work through partnerships because your local partner understands how people buy products, what influences them to buy products, and they have relationships with retailers, wholesalers and so forth.

Musonda said distribution costs are lower and corporate partners can import Java Foods products without paying customs duty. She added:

We are just about to introduce ‘Supa Cereal’ (our fortified instant maize soya porridge) into Zimbabwe. Since the COVID-19 pandemic hit, we do find that our consumers are now looking at nutritious foods to enhance immune systems; eat right to keep healthy.

So Supa Cereal is a product of choice. But we feel that by the end of the year, you will be able to find both products in both countries.

ZERA Says Fuel Supply To Improve This Saturday

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) says there should be an improvement in the supply and availability of petrol from this Saturday after Mozambican authorities finished the scheduled maintenance at Beira port.

ZERA chief executive officer Eddington Mazambani told The Herald on Friday that the situation should normalise by Tuesday.

Said Mazambani:

The shortage of petrol is a temporary one occasioned by logistical challenges which have been attended to.

From tomorrow (today) the situation should improve, getting back to normal by Monday or Tuesday.

A number of service stations in Harare and some towns have been without petrol for several days, evoking memories of the horrors of 2018 and 2019 when motorists had to sleep in fuel queues for days on end.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana also said petrol supplies will stabilise soon. He tweeted on Saturday:There has been a disruption in the fuel supply chain due to a scheduled maintenance program at Beira.

This is now complete and we expect the petrol backlog to start clearing from the end of today into Monday and Tuesday.

The inconvenience to the public is noted and regretted.

Granny Hauled To Court For Posioning Neighbour’s Goats

By A Correspondent- A 71 year old woman from Woodville plots in Bulawayo was dragged before a magistrate charged with malicious damage to property after she allegedly poisoned her neighbour’s six goats resulting in the death of two of the goats.

The suspect, Busisiwe Hove pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu who remanded her out of custody to Tuesday next week.

The court heard that Hove and the complainant in the case, Siduduzile Phiri (46) are neighbours in Woodville.

It is alleged that Phiri’s goats were always straying into Hove’s plot and she was not happy with that.

It is further alleged that Hove put poison into some water and then gave the contaminated water to Phiri’s goats when they strayed into her yard.

After drinking the poisoned water, two of Phiri’s goats fell sick and thereafter died while the other four also fell sick and suffered internal injuries.

Phiri reported the matter to the police leading to Hove’s arrest.

By A Correspondent- A High Court judge has ruled in a favour of a Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) student, Panashe Mphathisi Ndlovu who was accused of hacking the learning institution’s examination database.

Ndlovu, who is studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in business management and entrepreneurship, has been out of school since August 2020.

The CUT student disciplinary committee found him guilty of misconduct and suspended him for four semesters.

Ndlovu was charged with contravening the Rules of Student Conduct and Discipline Ordinance 2 on the prohibition of cybercrimes, court papers showed.

The university alleged that in 2019, Ndlovu engaged an unknown hacker or manipulated the examination database himself and forged his results in two courses, which he had failed and converted into passes.

A disciplinary hearing found him guilty and suspended him from August 2020 to June 2022.

Ndlovu then approached the High Court, arguing that the decision to suspend him was grossly irregular because it was arrived at in the absence of a reasoned process.

In her judgement, High Court judge Justice Emilia Muchawa said there was no evidence to prove Ndlovu committed the alleged offence. She ruled:

For the disciplinary committee, fully aware of its standard of proof, to have convicted after making it clear in its judgment, that there were loopholes in the university’s evidence, insufficient evidence in some respects, that certain aspects had been proven on a balance of probability was grossly unreasonable.

Most fatal was the admission that it was impractical to prove this kind of offence beyond a reasonable doubt.

The decision of the first and third respondents to convict Ndlovu be and is hereby set aside.

Their decision to reverse his passes in the CUMT 105 and CURMSC 223 be and is hereby set aside, their decision to suspend the applicant for four semesters be and is hereby set aside.

Justice Muchawa also ordered costs against the university on a higher scale for causing Ndlovu to spend funds filing the court case.

Mwonzora’s Camp Denies Dr Khupe Recall

By A Correspondent- The Douglas Mwonzora-led MDC-T has denied claims that it is planning to recall its vice president Thokozani Khupe from Parliament.

This follows reports indicating that the fractured opposition party held a national council meeting on 26 November where it was resolved to recall Khupe and eventually sack her from the party.

Khupe accuses the MDC-T of being tribalistic and has demanded that the party come out clean on attempts to fire her.

Through her lawyers Ncube Attorneys, Khupe wrote a letter to party secretary-general Paurina Mupariwa on Friday in which she alleged the party held a national council meeting on 26 November where the plot to recall her was hatched.

Khupe snubbed a recent meeting of the party’s shadow cabinet and has been avoiding some of the party programmes.

However, MDC-T acting chairman, Giles Mutseyekwa, dismissed Khupe’s claims, saying there was never such a meeting. Said Mutseyekwa:

At the last national council meeting we had, Khupe was in attendance and she was the first to even contribute as she was saying we should delay holding our congress.

She told us that the party needed more time to prepare for our congress but we felt that we have to do it as a matter of urgency.

So, it will be interesting to see the letter in which she alleges these things.

The factionalism which emerged at the chaotic MDC-T extraordinary congress held on 27 December 2020 has followed the party since, with the rifts seemingly widening.

“Hookers” Lament Covid-19 Pandemic Induced Hardships

By A Correspondent- With social distancing rules in place and nightclubs and bars closing earlier than usual, sex workers around the city have seen their incomes disappear almost overnight as a result of the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19).

Fearing for their livelihoods, as well as their health, some are offering services online to keep their business going, while others are turning to charities for help.

Ntando Ncube* has worked as a “hooker” for the past 10 years in Bulawayo, carefully building relationships with her clients.

But the spread of Covid-19 and the need for social distancing has prompted a drop in sex work, leaving her worried that her efforts will go to waste.

“It’s fair to say that if I’m not working for six months, a lot of people are going to forget me,” she says.

“I can’t contact my clients and just have a conversation with them. That doesn’t work in my industry. We need to build intimacy and that’s just not possible in the current environment.”

Before the Covid-19 outbreak, Ntando says she was earning an above-average income, and was able to get herself decent accommodation in North End.

Now nearly all her income has been lost. She has tried to adapt by moving her business online through WhatsApp, but says that cannot replace physical contact.

“Unfortunately, there are things that can’t be translated,” she says.

“I have made efforts to go online but not everyone is tech savvy. Some of my clients don’t even really know how to use a smartphone.”

While the Central Government has outlined a clear roadmap to reopening restaurants and cafes, there has been no plan for the sex industry.

That uncertainty, coupled with the many unknowns surrounding the virus itself, has left many sex workers with deep anxiety.

“I’m scared that all my work will come back to zero and I will just have to start hustling like I did when I first started out,” Ntando says.

She also fears for her clients’ health.

Are they even going to be there?” she says.

“There’s a lot of nervous energy going around.”

That’s left sex worker collectives and advocacy groups calling for members of the public to donate to emergency funds.

“These have been a real lifeline to sex workers for immediate bill paying, access to food and other key needs.

Some sex workers have been forced to continue working, risking hefty fines or exposure to the virus.

“In this country, sex workers are often the main breadwinner for the whole family, for their siblings, their children and their grandparents. So, this affects the whole extended family,” Ntando says.

But some sex workers find themselves unable to keep working – even if they would choose to. In Bulawayo, police have been patrolling the streets arresting anyone found on the streets during the curfew period.

In Zimbabwe, the Government set 9pm to 6am as curfew times in an effort to curtail the spread of the pandemic.

“We cannot work now, so we don’t have any income, which is scary,” says “Pinky”, who didn’t want to give her real name.

Pinky supports three children who live with her sister back in her rural village. She came to the city eight years ago when she was just 16. Although she needs money, she worries about the dangers of working during the pandemic.

“Even if we could work, people’s lives are at risk from the virus. We’d be scared to go to bed with our clients anyway, as we don’t know who is affected,” she says.

Prior to the coronavirus outbreak, thousands of ‘Johns’ would make use of their services every day and night. Many of the women and children who have turned to prostitution are victims of some sort of abuse with many of the younger ones runaways from family abuse.

“A lot of us either ran away or were thrown out of their homes as children. We lived on the streets and eventually turned to sex work to make ends meet,” says Patience Munyandu, who originally comes from Masvingo.

“I came to Bulawayo when I was 11, lived on the streets and was eventually raped when I was 14. After being raped, I couldn’t report my attacker because I didn’t even know his name. He just picked me up off the streets and promised me a home.

He took me to his house where he raped me all night before kicking me out in the morning,” Patience told Sunday News.

“I decided I may as well start making money from my body and maybe get off the streets. And for three years now I have worked on the streets,” Patience said.

While the Government and local aid organisations have delivered some emergency funds to the women, Patience says it has not been enough and some women received nothing at all.

“The amount of donations they’ve received from the Government or NGOs does not cover much,” she says.- Sunday News

Dr Khupe Hits Back At Mwonzora

By A Correspondent-MDC-T leader, Douglas Mwonzora, is reportedly plotting to recall his deputy and the former party leader (on an interim basis), Thokozani Khupe, from Parliament.

Khupe is through her lawyers demanding minutes of a meeting where resolutions and recommendations were made to expel her and her allies.

She is alleging that some tribal remarks were made during the MDC-T National Council meeting held in Harare on 26 November 2021.

Khupe and Mwonzora were instrumental in purging MDC Alliance MPs from Parliament and their officials from councils.

Below is a letter written by Khupe’s lawyers to the party’s Secretary-General:

RE: PENDING AND EXPULSION RECALL OF PARTY MEMBERS

The above matter refers.

We represent the Deputy President Hon Doctor Thokozani Khupe in this matter. Please note our professional interests.

We have been advised by our client that on the 26th of November 2021, and at Morgan Tsvangirai House, there was a National Council meeting which was held in the capital city. In that meeting, there were certain words that were used by some members that were clearly of tribalistic nature.

Further, we have been advised that it is in that meeting where certain recommendations were made to recall, Doctor Khupe and others from Parliament and local authorities. We are advised that your goad office is in possession of such minutes and resolutions.

We request that your good office share with our client, the minutes and the resolutions of the National Council of the 26th of November 2021 urgently so that we could be in a position to take full instructions.

We have it on good authority that the intended recalls were due any time, therefore, we expect to hear from yourselves as a matter of urgency.

Your usual co-operation shall be greatly appreciated.

Yours faithfully

Traditional Leaders In Crunch Indaba Over Gukurahundi

By A Correspondent- Traditional leaders have met to map the way forward on how they will tackle the Gukurahundi issue within their communities.

Chiefs from the Matabeleland region and Midlands Province were mandated to handle the Gukurahundi issue following a series of meetings with President Mnangagwa.

The last meeting between the President and the Chiefs was held at the State House in Bulawayo in September.

Due to their proximity to communities, it was resolved that the traditional leadership institution is a key stakeholder in handling problems affecting communities including the Gukurahundi matter.

However, the Covid-19 pandemic which has forced Government to restrict movement of people through lockdowns has largely hindered chiefs from implementing resolutions that were made with the President.

Chiefs have been meeting behind closed doors in Bulawayo for a four-day indaba at a local hotel to discuss a range of issues, with Gukurahundi on their agenda today.

In an interview, Deputy President of the National Council of Chiefs, Chief Mtshana said it was his hope that today’s meeting will produce concrete resolutions that they will take to the people.

“Like he (Chief Charumbira) told you, yes we are going to talk about it tomorrow,” said Chief Mtshana.

He said it was worrying that after chiefs were given the mandate to advance the Gukurahundi agenda they have not done much on the ground.

“As chiefs we have been given this mandate to deal with the Gukurahundi issue.

So, we are to do it step by step. As a result of lockdown measures that have been imposed to contain the spread of Covid-19, we have not done much.

“So, we have not really sat down to discuss how we will handle this since we had our last meeting. So, I hope tomorrow we will come up with a strategy on the way forward,” he said.

The president of the Chiefs Council, Chief Charumbira, briefly confirmed that Gukurahundi would be on their agenda in their meeting that is being held today.

“That will be on the agenda tomorrow.

It will be more of a feedback meeting on how far we have gone,” he said.

Chief Charumbira recently told Chronicle that the resolutions that the chiefs are going to come up with are going to be presented to President Mnangagwa before implementation.

The traditional leaders are expected to lead the reburial of victims of Gukurahundi in Matabeleland and the Midlands while Government will be involved in funding the process, as part of initiatives meant to address the issue and promote national healing.

The chiefs have in the past called for patience as they try to resolve the emotive issue stating that peace building takes time.

Since President Mnangagwa came to power, following operation restore legacy in 2017, he has called on the country not to be a hostage to its past, but confront it head on.

The President said Gukurahundi should be openly discussed to enable the nation to move on, which in itself was a break from the past.

President Mnangagwa has since instructed Government departments, including the Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage, to facilitate that those who were affected by Gukurahundi access national documents.

Woman Molests Minor Boy

By A Correspondent- A 46 year old woman from Rusape recently molested a 15-year-old boy during the night at her home after restraining him from going back home on the pretext that it was too dark.

CSOs Tear Into ED Over Failure Shrinking Democratic Space

By A Correspondent- Civil society organisations (CSOs) yesterday said President Emmerson Mnangagwa had failed to honour his November 2017 pledge to uphold human rights and promote good governance, as he continues to further shrink the democratic space in the country.

The Election Resource Centre (ERC) said: “ERC continues to push for the by-elections to be held. Elections are the bedrock of participatory democracy and the continued suspension of by-elections infringes on citizens human rights. – NewsDay

Nothing Wrong With Fundraising For President Chamisa ‘s Bulletproof Car

By A Correspondent- An initiative by MDC Alliance supporters to raise US$120 000 to buy a bullet-proof vehicle for their leader Nelson Chamisa has seemingly angered ZANU PF.

After the fundraising initiative exceeded the target last week, ZANU PF sympathisers, among them Information secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana suggested that the crowdfunding violated the Political Parties Finance Act.

The law bans Zimbabwean political parties from receiving external funding.

However, a legal expert, Professor Lovemore Madhuku told The Standard that there was nothing wrong with the fundraising by the MDC Alliance supporters and any attempt to seize the vehicle will be illegal and an abuse of power. Said Madhuku:

There is nothing wrong with party supporters coming together to buy their leader anything.

These are ordinary people who can come together and buy their leader a vehicle. They are not foreigners and this is not foreign funding.

It is not prohibited under the said Act and it will also be evil if anyone prohibits that initiative by the supporters.

It’s like when you are on a campaign trail and someone wants to cook for you or provide transport for you, it is not prohibited and cannot be prohibited by the Political Party Finances Act or any other law.

There is nowhere they can impound this. It will be an abuse of power and very illegal.

There is no provision that allows that. When a vehicle comes, as long as it pays duty and all those other things, they cannot do anything.

Another legal expert, Bulawayo-based Nqobani Sithole, said as long as the vehicle was declared and was transported legally into the country and duty was paid for it, then there would be no justification to impound it. Said, Sithole:

The mischief of the Political Parties Finance Act is to avoid clandestine donations.

However, if it is declared, and there is no violation of any law, for example, the Foreign Exchange and Money Laundering Act, then that kind of donation will be above board.

The law provides for this, but that can be an exception as long as it is declared. At the end of the day, whatever resources parties get should be made clear.

There should not be any clandestine dealings, and sources of finance should be known by the regulating authorities.

Posting on Twitter, Mangwana suggested that there was reasonable justification to confiscate Chamisa’s vehicle as happened with the late MDC founding president Morgan Tsvangirai’s BMW X5 which was impounded by the police in Lupane in 2008.

Meanwhile, MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende said the party was pushing for the release of Tsvangirai’s vehicle in Lupane and other MDC vehicles being kept in Gweru.-standard

Byo Man In Soup For Circulating Pornographic Picture

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo man has been arrested for distributing pornographic images on WhatsApp of a man and a woman in a compromising position.

Sydney Ndhlukula (63) becomes one of the first individuals likely to be charged under the Cyber Security and Data Protection Act.

The Cyber Security and Data Protection Bill was recently signed into law by President Emmerson Mnangagwa after it passed through both the National Assembly and Senate.

Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) spokesperson for Bulawayo Province Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the case was under investigation. He said:

The matter in question is under investigation and the investigating officers are almost done with it.

They are still working out the exact charges and as soon as this is done, the suspect will be brought before the courts.

Ndhlukula was first picked by police on Tuesday after a complaint was filed by his neighbour, Rose Dube.

He was interviewed again by the police on Friday and a docket has since been opened against him.

Speaking to The Sunday News at her home last Friday, Dube said Ndhlukula sent her a picture of a couple being intimate. She said:

Last week Ndhlukula sent me a picture showing two people having sexual intercourse.

Initially, I thought he was joking but after a few more chats, I realised that he was actually seriously thinking it was indeed me in the picture.

I then told him that it wasn’t me but he went on to forward the picture to many groups.

I personally know of several people who have in-boxed me telling me about the picture and how he has been telling people it was me in it.

Even after I told him that it wasn’t me in the picture, he went to create a photo collage with the real pictures of me and added the one with the naked woman also and distributed it among several people some of whom I know.

I even asked him what his wife would think of me if she saw the pictures but he didn’t seem to care.

Dube accused Ndhlukula of ruining her life as she can no longer freely move around the neighbourhood saying she has lost the respect of her children and neighbours. She said:

I now understand what makes people consider suicide.

Local Authority To Repossess Stands

By A Correspondent- The City of Bulawayo is set to repossess several undeveloped stands in Emganwini high-density suburb, some of which are sited on wetlands.

According to the latest council minutes, the local authority has served beneficiaries of the housing stands with noncompliance letters for failure to develop them since 2002.

Bulawayo City Council director of housing and community services, Dictor Khumalo said the stands targeted for repossession were allocated to the beneficiaries between 15 September 2000 and 21 November 2002.

A report tabled at the 8 December full council meeting quoted Khumalo as saying:

Some beneficiaries were served with non-compliance letters and constant checks showed that there were no developments on the stands to date.

These stands had been turned into refuse dumping sites, thus posing a health hazard. The stands also owe rates.

Meanwhile, the council’s human capital office raised no objections to the housing and community services department repossessing the idle stands.

Chamber secretary Sikhangele Zhou then said if notices had been given, and the notice period had expired, the council must repossess the stands in terms of the agreements of sale.

The report said:

The financial director (Kempton Ndimande) had no objection to the intention to repossess the stands.

The beneficiaries should be dealt with as per policy.

The department’s view was that the stands be repossessed and be allocated to beneficiaries on the council waiting list as per policy with the exception of stand 6001.

The beneficiary of stand 6001 had already done a slab development and should be given a further building period extension of 24 months, failure of which council would take stern action.

The local authority said after repossession of the stands, the original beneficiaries must be given the first preference to buy them back at a price to be determined by the city valuer. The report said:

An extension fee of the building period of $7 000 will be paid. Failure to take up the offer in terms of policy, the stands will be re-allocated to other beneficiaries on the council waiting list in terms of procedure.

The City of Bulawayo has a housing waiting list of over 100 000.

Zanu PF Supporters Put Mugabe, Kasukuwere Images On Party WhatsApp Groups

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF warned members associating with former national commissar Saviour Kasukuwere that they risk suspension from the ruling party.

The threat comes amid accusations that some party members were putting Kasukuwere’s image as well as that of the late former president Robert Mugabe on party WhatsApp groups.

Zanu PF also wants party members to always denounce Kasukuwere, popularly known as Tyson.

The former commissar relocated to South Africa in the aftermath of the November 2017 military coup that toppled Mugabe and replaced him with Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Tyson has been linked to a plan to challenge Mnangagwa in the 2023 general elections, a move that has reportedly polarised Zanu PF structures.

Zanu PF Meeting Cancelled Over Flu Like Symptoms

By A Correspondent- A Zanu PF Mashonaland West provincial coordinating committee (PCC) meeting scheduled for Saturday was cancelled at the eleventh hour after 50 members sent apologies they could not attend owing to illness.

The meeting was postponed indefinitely after about a third of the PCC members said they were exhibiting flu-like symptoms, which are suspected COVID-19 positive cases.

The ZANU PF provincial structure has over 180 members.

The province had been without a substantive chairperson since June following the promotion of Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi to the party’s Politburo.
