A fatal road accident occurred on the Harare-Chirundu Road on New Year’s Eve, resulting in the deaths of three people and injuring ten others.

According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the accident took place around 8 pm and involved an Isuzu KB 250 and an overloaded Toyota Probox carrying 13 passengers.

The police report stated that the Isuzu KB 250 side-swiped the Toyota Probox, which had exceeded its recommended passenger capacity. The victims’ bodies were taken to the Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital mortuary, while the injured were admitted to the same hospital for treatment.

The accident highlights concerns about road safety and potential issues with vehicle regulation enforcement.

Zanu PF official Killer Zivhu has strongly criticized the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) for its treatment of the country’s most vulnerable citizens.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, Zivhu condemned what he referred to as “anti-people tactics” by the tax agency, accusing them of exacerbating the suffering of struggling families.

Zivhu expressed his concerns, saying, “Others are celebrating, but how can we be happy when ZIMRA’s harsh tactics are suffocating our struggling families?

They’re draining the life out of those already bleeding.”

He called for unity among traders, urging them to stand against what he views as unfair practices. “Calling all traders! Let’s take a stand against ZIMRA’s unfair practices.

If they want tax from informal traders, we demand a seat at the table to negotiate fair terms. No seizing livelihoods without dialogue!”

The Zanu PF official also expressed frustration at ZIMRA’s shift in priorities, questioning its integrity. He said, “Concerned about ZIMRA’s shift from ‘carrying the citizen’s load’ to allowing smuggling, taking bribes & seizing goods later.
Is this incompetence or intentional?”

Zivhu warned that ZIMRA’s actions could have severe consequences for the nation, particularly for children.

“The actions of ZIMRA will have devastating consequences. Many children will be forced to drop out of school. Some may even nostalgically yearn for the days of colonial rule, opting for stability and food over independence and poverty.”

“ZIMRA derives its mandate from stipulated laws, and customs officers are simply enforcing laws that are already in place,” the source said.

A murder investigation is underway in Kwekwe after Lloyd Zhakata, 21, was fatally stabbed at a bar in Joseph Village, Zhombe on December 30, 2024.

The victim sustained a chest wound inflicted by a Colombia knife. According to reports, the suspect alleged that Zhakata had assaulted his younger brother prior to the incident.

The suspect is currently at large.

South Africa- Capitec Bank has frozen the accounts of Zimbabwean Exemption Permit (ZEP) holders, leaving thousands grappling with disrupted financial transactions and remittances.

This action comes despite the South African government’s recent extension of the ZEP validity.

On November 28, 2024, South African Home Affairs Minister Leon Schreiber announced a 12-month extension for ZEPs, pushing the expiration date to November 28, 2025.

The extension was intended to provide relief and allow ZEP holders more time to regularise their status or explore alternative solutions.

However, the closure of accounts by Capitec has raised serious concerns about inconsistencies in the interpretation of the extension and its implications for financial institutions.

Ngqabutho Mabhena, Chairperson of the Zimbabwe Community in South Africa, criticised the bank’s decision, highlighting the distress it has caused for Zimbabweans who depend on these accounts for essential financial activities, including supporting families back home.

The ZEP, introduced in 2010, offered temporary legal status to Zimbabweans fleeing economic and political turmoil.

Initially valid for four years, it has since been periodically renewed, with over 180,000 beneficiaries using the permit to build livelihoods in South Africa.

However, its future has remained uncertain amid growing political and economic pressures within South Africa.

The freezing of accounts highlights broader challenges faced by migrants in South Africa, underscoring a complex intersection of policy, economic integration, and social inclusion.

Advocacy groups and ZEP holders have called for clearer communication and a unified approach to ensure compliance with the government’s directives without further marginalising permit holders.

A senseless act of violence has claimed the life of 34-year-old Douglas Dube in Gokwe, Zimbabwe. According to a statement released by the police, Dube was brutally murdered on December 27, 2024, after attempting to stop a fight near Makwakwa Business Centre.

“The victim had intervened to stop the suspect, Descent Gumbi, from assaulting Trust Manyemwe, who was being accused of dating the suspect’s girlfriend,” said the police. “The victim succumbed to the injuries on the way to the hospital on December 28, 2024.”

Police reports indicate that Dube was hit with a knobkerrie all over his body, resulting in fatal injuries. The suspect, Descent Gumbi, 22, is currently on the run, and the police are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“We invite anyone with information to report at any nearest Police Station,” said the police.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the need for conflict resolution and violence prevention strategies.

By Crime and Courts Reporter- A senior police officer based in Mvurwi tragically lost his life after being struck by a haulage truck at a roadblock, while another officer sustained injuries in a separate incident.

Both cases have reignited public anger over the Zimbabwe Republic Police’s (ZRP) heavy-handed tactics.

The fatal accident occurred on December 30 along the Mazowe-Centenary Road. 

Commissioner Paul Nyathi, ZRP spokesperson, confirmed the incident, saying:

“The ZRP confirms a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 30/12/24 at around 1750 hours at the 42 km peg along Mazowe-Centenary Road, Mvurwi, in which a police officer was killed. The officer was conducting roadblock duties when a Freightliner Columbia truck, traveling towards Mazowe, evaded the checkpoint and hit him on the head with the trailer. The truck then collided with a stationary Nissan X-Trail vehicle. The officer was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mvurwi Hospital.”

In a separate incident on Monday, another officer was injured while directing traffic in Masvingo near the Chevron Hotel. 

The officer sustained a swollen heel after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene.

The incidents have drawn attention to the widespread perception of police misconduct at roadblocks.

Motorists often accuse ZRP officers of harassment, extortion, and excessive force. 

Common complaints include officers snatching car keys or confiscating driver’s licenses to coerce bribes for fabricated or trivial offenses.

These actions have fueled public resentment, with many viewing the police as adversaries rather than protectors. 

Officers have also endangered public safety by physically confronting kombi (commuter omnibus) drivers, risking harm to passengers.

Outgoing Commissioner General Godwin Matanga, who succeeded Augustine Chihuri after the November 2017 coup, admitted early in his tenure that the police had alienated the public. 

He apologised to the nation and pledged to professionalise the force—a promise many believe remains unfulfilled.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed the Death Penalty Abolition Bill into law before he commenced his annual leave yesterday, effectively marking the end of capital punishment in the country’s legal statutes.

The Bill, which sailed through Parliament last month, is set to save more than 65 convicts facing the gallows, as the Government takes bold steps to remove capital punishment from the statutes.

Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Dr Martin Rushwaya, made the announcement in an Extraordinary Government Gazette published yesterday.
“The following laws, which were assented to by His Excellency the President, are published in terms of section 131(6)(a) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe—Death Penalty Abolition Act [Chapter 9:26] (No. 4 of 2024),” reads the notice.

The Government’s decision to expunge the death penalty will see the country moving with international trends and best practices, as capital punishment has since been regarded as inhumane.

The Bill was initially introduced by Dzivaresekwa, a member of parliament, Mr Edwin Mushoriwa, before the government took over, given its importance.
Following the gazetting of the Act, a person convicted of murder in aggravating circumstances shall be liable to a jail term of between 20 years and life imprisonment.
In abolishing the death penalty, Clause Two of the Act reads as follows: “No court shall impose sentence of death upon a person for any offence, whenever committed, but instead shall impose whatever other competent sentence is appropriate in the circumstances of the  case.
“The Supreme Court shall not confirm a sentence of death imposed upon an appellant, whenever that sentence may have been imposed, but instead shall substitute whatever other competent sentence is appropriate in the circumstances of the case, no sentence of death, whenever imposed, shall be carried out.”

By Courts and Crime Reporter- At least 14 passengers were injured after a Nissan Caravan Kombi was involved in an accident.

The accident happened on Friday along Lyton Road.

Police said the kombi, with 18 passengers on board, veered off the road and landed in a ditch.

The injured victims were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital for treatment. 

The ZRP said:

Police in Mbare are investigating a serious road traffic accident which occurred along Lyton Road, Harare on 27/12/24. 14 passengers were injured when a Nissan Caravan Kombi with 18 passengers on board veered off the road and landed in a ditch. The injured victims were taken to Sally Mugabe Hospital for treatment.

A Toyota Hiace, commonly referred to as a “Caravan” in Zimbabwe, typically has a passenger capacity of 15 to 16 seats.

However, it has become common for kombis to be overloaded, with each vehicle often carrying at least 20 passengers when considered “full.”

Even at police roadblocks, overloaded kombis are typically allowed to pass.
