Kwekwe Provincial Hospital is facing a severe shortage of accommodation for doctors, hindering the recruitment of critical medical staff.
The crisis began in 2022 when a fire ravaged the hospital’s doctors’ quarters, which the government has yet to rebuild.
District Medical Officer, Dr. Nyasha Mwasunda, highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that the lack of accommodation is a significant obstacle in attracting and retaining essential technical staff.
The district is currently experiencing a 16% shortage of critical personnel, including pharmacists, nurses, and doctors.
The shortage of accommodation has resulted in the hospital struggling to fill vacant positions, exacerbating the existing staffing shortages. Dr. Mwasunda emphasized the need for prompt action to address the accommodation crisis and ensure the hospital can provide quality healthcare services to the community.
