Care for Someone is a small charity, working hard to make a big difference to the lives of children in Zimbabwe. The charity has been operating since 2001. When we started working in Zimbabwe in 2001 our work focused on girls, this has since changed and we support both gender.
In recent years, the world has seen a substantial fall in extreme poverty but despite government initiatives, there are still Zimbabwean children who have no access to education. HIV/AIDS has ravaged the country, wiping out a whole generation and leaving as many as 1.6million children without parental care. Many young people, under the age of 18, have become the main breadwinner, caring for siblings, a sick parent or grandparent. Unemployment is high and there is no welfare support. These children are destined to a life of exploitation, destitution, prostitution, mental health problems and substance abuse.
Despite the efforts of non-governmental organisations operating in Zimbabwe to support all children attend classes, there are still many children facing challenges to get an education due to the ‘school fees system’ introduced by the government. Children who are unable to pay school fees are not permitted to attend classes and can only do so upon payment of all fees due. The political turmoil has created economic collapse which has led to high unemployment rates and the informal sector faces challenges. This leaves families with little opportunity to earn an income.
Our Aim
Educational support and the relief of unemployment for marginalised groups and, in particular, for the benefit of marginalised young people (“the beneficiaries”) in such ways as may be thought fit.
What we do
Care for Someone identifies the most vulnerable in the community and instigates a plan of care to address their needs. A culture of dependency is discouraged; instead, families are supported until they are able to help themselves. For example, by the provision of seeds and tools. Food may be grown and the surplus sold and used towards school fees. Before that can happen, Care for Someone will pay for schooling and uniforms, books and stationery and in extreme cases, food and clothes.
As a grass roots charity run by volunteers, Care for Someone has no administration or management costs. All donations go to help to support a family and educate a child.
Our areas of work
We are currently working in Ruwa, Harare, Murewa and Kwekwe supporting children aged between 5-18 years of age in pre-school, primary and secondary education.
