ZIMBABWEANS prefer foreign direct investment (FDI) to indigenisation for employment creation, a new survey by the Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) has revealed.Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News, Zimbabwe News.
According to the survey, an overwhelming 72% of respondents subscribes to the sentiment that FDI was the way to go in terms of rejuvenating the economy.
“Zimbabweans have over the past two years maintained their preference for encouraging job creation through foreign investment rather than the indigenisation of the economy by taking over foreign-owned companies, despite the preference having dropped by six percentage points from 78% in 2012 to 72% in 2014,” revealed the survey.
“These results come in at a time when the Zimbabwean economy is experiencing a downward spiral, with an estimated unemployment rate of over 80% and there is consensus among political parties and the civil society on the need to stop the free fall of the country’s economy and empowering the citizens of Zimbabwe.”
However, the report said, there was no policy consensus regarding the methods of achieving these goals.
“There are two contrasting viewpoints that dominate the debate on empowerment in Zimbabwe. The first school of thought (indigenisation) is popularised by Zanu PF while the second paradigm, that of encouraging foreign investment, is mainly popular with the opposition parties, particularly the MDC-T,” said the report.
The survey also showed that support for FDI is high among both male and female respondents as there was only a three percentage point difference between the males (73%) and the females (70%) who prefer foreign investment to Indigenisation.
“In 2012, urban dwellers were significantly more inclined to prefer the foreign investment strategy (88%) compared to their rural dwellers (74%),” said the report.
“A disaggregation of data by province revealed that all provinces are in support of foreign investment although the intensity of that support differed across provinces.

At 52%, Mashonaland Central province recorded the least proportion of respondents who supported FDI.

The report said 93% of respondents who said they would vote for the MDC-T supported the strategy of FDI compared to over half (53%) of Zanu PF supporters who echoed similar sentiments.
On the other hand, more than 10 in Zanu PF loyalists (41%) supported the indigenisation policy as compared to only 6% of MDC-T supporters.

People need to be extremely careful about these surveys coz surveys can easily be manipulated to produce the result that one wants!! For a start, the survey needs to openly declare exactly how many people -in absolute numbers- were interviewed coz percentages can be extremely misleading. A farmer with only 2 oxen who loses one of them to, say foot & mouth, can be said to have lost 50% of his herd!!

The MPOI survey was not scientific at all; and was, in fact, designed to confirm a pre-determined agenda or viewpoint. The truth of the matter is simply that indigenisation and FDI are NOT mutually exclusive!! It’s not a question of either/or!! This is why there is NO CONTRADICTION whatsoever for ZPF to be championing indigenisation [Zim-Asset] whilst Gushaz is simultaneously trying to attract FDI through those deals with China, Russia, and re-engagement with the west.
