Harare – Zimbabwe’s civil servants have been given a Christmas shock, instead of a present – they’ won’t be getting bonuses.
President Robert Mugabe, who is out of the country on his annual holiday, said in a statement there wasn’t enough money to pay the country’s 248 000 civil servants bonuses.
The annual bonuses will only be paid to those working in the security forces.
“This is scandalous,” Ladistious Zunde, a teachers’ union leader told the Associated Press. “Our members cannot plan for anything in the face of uncertainty and the future is bleak since this has happened before and industries continue to close.”
Zunde said the government promised to pay outstanding bonuses in January, but that he and other civil servants were doubtful.
Christmas spending is down this year, according to Harare street vendors.

  3. So, why give the police, army and CIO bonuses? If the rest of the civil servants have balls they should make noise….

  4. God Bless you brother, well said. People should start thinking of others in a worse situation than them, that is the homeless, lame, blind, widows and the poor in general. Even these solders, CIO and the Police should not have been given bonuses but should have been given to the poor. AMEN. Messenger Of God

  6. Civil servants must be civil enough to understand that many Zimbabweans are not even getting salaries , let alone bonuses due to current economic hardships. The govt should have told all the public servants including ministers to forgo bonuses in sympathy with all who are also suffering .Public opinion has no sympathy with the insensitive lot. The money for their bonuses should be directed even to assist the unemployed who are worse off than those `working`!
