The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has strongly condemned the recent attack on peacekeeping soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by M23 rebels. In a statement released on Saturday, the SADC Secretariat denounced the attacks, emphasizing that they undermine the sovereignty, territorial integrity, peace, and security of the DRC and the SADC region ¹.
The M23 rebel group’s pursuit of territorial expansion has exacerbated the already dire humanitarian and security situation in Eastern DRC, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced, particularly women, children, and the elderly. The recent attack in the Eastern city of Goma resulted in the tragic loss of at least 13 foreign peacekeepers ¹.
SADC has extended its heartfelt condolences to the families and countries of the deceased. The organization’s mission in the DRC, SAMIDRC, remains committed to supporting efforts to address the prevailing security and humanitarian crisis in Eastern DRC.
