Vice President Constantino Chiwenga publicly criticized businessman Wicknell Chivayo during a speech at the burial of Justin Mupamhanga at the National Heroes Acre on Monday, accusing him of indulging in corruption and unethical behavior.
Chiwenga contrasted Chivayo’s actions with the ideals of the liberation struggle, stating that unlike the principled combatants of that era, Chivayo’s pursuit of wealth through questionable means is deeply troubling.
“Our vision for 2030 is for all of us, not for those who grow fat through ill-gotten wealth and dubious morals,” Chiwenga remarked, referencing those who enrich themselves at the expense of others. “A nation is as developed as its weakest citizen, and as its remotest area,” he continued, emphasizing the need for inclusivity and equity in national development.
Chiwenga assured the public that the government is aware of ongoing challenges faced by citizens, including unreliable public transport, an unregulated informal market, and issues in healthcare and infrastructure. He reaffirmed that efforts are being made to address these problems.
Additionally, Chiwenga touched on the importance of succession in leadership, underscoring the values of mutual respect, equity, and equality as fundamental principles for effective governance.
“The gold, the diamonds, the platinum, the sought-after lithium, uranium, gas, oil, and rare earth minerals—all of which foreigners never fully enjoyed before our time—must now be shared fairly for the development of Zimbabwe,” Chiwenga concluded, reinforcing the need for resource distribution to benefit the nation’s people.
