A recent report from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) reveals a concerning surge in road fatalities during the festive season.

Between December 15 and 26, a total of 77 lives were lost in over 1,000 traffic accidents. This period covers significant public holidays, including Christmas and Boxing Day.

According to Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi, although the number of fatalities increased, the total number of accidents recorded actually declined compared to the same period last year.

This trend suggests that while efforts to reduce accidents may be yielding results, more needs to be done to prevent fatalities.

In a similar report last year, the Zimbabwe Republic Police noted a considerable improvement in road safety statistics during the festive season, with a decrease in fatal accidents and casualties.

The Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe also recorded a decline in road accidents, with 38,482 incidents reported between January and September 2023 .
