100 more coronavirus cases have been detected at Sacred Heart Girls High School, the Ministry of Health and Child Care said on Saturday. It said:

100 more new cases from some boarding school in Mat South (Sacred High): the outbreak is localised at the school.

This comes after the headmistress at the Roman Catholic Church-run girls school, Sister Ludo Ncube last informed parents and guardians that five coronavirus cases had been recorded at the school. She said in a statement:

“On behalf of the school family, I would like to confirm five cases of COVID-19 all being pupils at our school.

“Tests for COVID-19 were administered at Esigodini Hospital after realizing that nine of our students had flu symptoms.

“We sent nine of them to the hospital, five of them tested positive and four negative. The tests were conducted this morning 7 April.

“All necessary precautions have been taken in line with COVID-19 protocols.”

On Friday it was reported that that 51 new coronavirus cases had been detected at Sacred Heart primary and secondary schools.

45 of the pupils that tested positive are boarders while four are day-scholars and the other two cases are staff members.
The latest development brings to close to 200 COVID-19 cases reported at the two schools.

Schools opened for the first term of the year late last month after a COVID-19 precautionary delay of three months following warnings of a potential third wave.

Since the re-opening, one other school, Prince Edward High School in Harare, reported that at least seven of its students had tested positive for the coronavirus.
