Zimbabwe has been suffering from a drought and that has drastically affected food availability

The United Nations (UN) has requested $331m in aid from countries to support drought-stricken Zimbabwe.

Kieno Kammis chats to journalist Peta Thornycroft on the matter in that country.

The situation in Zimbabwe is different in the urban areas as opposed to the rural areas. In the urban areas, there is food but the price of that food is too expensive. The price increases are so enormous because of the currency fluctuation.—

She says there was a severe drought last year in the rural areas and that is what the UN is talking about.

The world food programme has to go in there and it has to find money especially in the southern part of the country to feed people.—

She adds that the electricity issue is also a huge problem in that country.

At the moment, Zimbabwe is paying R14m a week to Eskom to import some electricity. That has meant that some people have had powercuts—
