Terrence Mawawa| In-spite of the fact the people of Zimbabwe were fully behind the military takeover that led to the ouster of Robert Mugabe, political analysts on Friday said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’ s government was illegitimate.
Mnangagwa ascended to power a few weeks after being fired from both Zanu PF and government by his long time boss Mugabe.Mnangagwa’ s dismissal marked a paradigm shift in the country’ s political circles.
However, renowned publisher and political analyst, Ibbo Mandaza told participants at a seminar in Harare Mnangagwa’ s government was unconstitutional.
He said SADC initially wanted to see a transition government in Zimbabwe, pending free elections.
He added it was important for the AU, the European Union, the United States and Britain to recognise that what happened in Zimbabwe was a coup and that the current government, headed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, was an illegitimate one.
He said there was still a strong military presence in Harare, and he speculated that Mugabe might be kept captive in his home.
“I wonder what will happen if Mugabe wants to leave for Singapore for his regular treatments.
What if Mugabe goes out and says he was forced to resign? What would be the implications? Can we explain why he is so closely guarded?”
said Mandaza.
Legal expert Kudakwashe Chitsike (Director of the Research and Advocacy Unit), said the transfer of power was not done according to the country’s constitution.
“Whether you like Mugabe or not, he was elected in 2013 and everybody accepted the election. You may not like the results, but he was elected,” she said.
She added SADC never had Zimbabwe as a priority and rubberstamped the elections despite disputes and violence.
Chitsike said Zimbabweans came out to march in support of the coup because it was Mugabe being deposed.

Constitutional and unconstitutional are words that do not resonate with the suffering masses. Mugabe was incapacitated and hence someone had to call him to order…and that was very constitutional. Read your constitution again Mr Ibbo.
Zviroooooto zve shuwa.
I thought he resigned ????????????
We Know you were the chief G40 advisor and strategist . Now that your strategies failed you are now doing the advocacy work for the G40 while your allie Sorobhangu is languishing is exile.
Until a full bench of Constitutional judges sits and determine the legality of the circumstances regarding the deposing of President Mugabe from power he remains the Dejure leader of the republic. The Constitution of Zimbabwe expressly bars members of the military from removing by force a sitting head of state from power, regardless of any reasons given for such act. It is treasonous to do so. Many will jump off this illegal and doomed ship once they have seen the light.
I agree with the Analysts. People should learn to stick to facts and avoid personalising issues. The problem with Africans is that we have this tendency of being so emotionally attached to Politicians – some on tribal lines, you wonder whether they are related to these Politicians.
This is not about liking or not liking Mnangagwa or Mugabe. Just stick to the facts and forget Mnangagwa is Karanga or that Mugabe is Zezuru or that Mugabe led Gukurahundi etc etc. I hate Mugabe with a passion, but the facts are that the 2013 elections were certified free and fair, though most of us would disagree. Mugabe got the recognition he needed. So, this means he became legitimately the President of Zim.
Now, you cant then come in and remove him via the military and then claim that is not a coup. The Constitution of Zim specifically prohibits the involvement of the Military in civilian politics. So, what ever this army did that led to Mugabe stepping down and whatever you call it, it was unconstitutional and therefore illegal. So, any government formed that basis can not be a legal government!
Ukaona Munangagwa ootongaaaa ndicho chibvumirano chatakaita nesu we povo …….. singing hangu
Mr Mandaza sir,why should Mugabe go to Singapore for medicals when all of us mere mortals have to go to Parirenyatwa? Does that sound constitutional for you?I am now starting to doubt your qualifications sir.
For the record, every other governement in zimbabwe has been illegitimate since day 1… saka zvese izvi hazvisi kushamisa.
what we as Zimbabweans wanted was at least to see another baboon take over like Muzenda said
Talk here and insult voices of reason as much as you can the facts will never change. This junta is illegitimate and it will never allow any free and fair elections in Zimbabwe. There will be a greater joy when finally Zimbabweans get genuine freedom. And this will happen in your life time as Grace Marufu Mugabe saw it a few weeks ago……The people belong to God and never to guns!
As far as we are concerned there has never been a legitimate government in Zimbabwe since 2000. Chashamisa apa chii? Go and fly a kite Ibbo.
I am sorry Experts its not going to change a flipping thing the horse has already bolted we have a new dispensation in place which was blessed by almost everyone including the international community and the povo who demostrated whilst most of you experts were hiding or enjoying everything in the comfort of your homes.
Like they say “Dogs will buck and the elephant will continue to go” Find something to talk about before you quickly lose relevance. Why should you think otherwise when everyone else(SADCC, AU, UN, America, Britain, China Russia) believe that there was no coup in Zimbabwe including the High Court.
We know Ibbho wanted a role for his relative Mai Mujuru, sorry maningi Ibho ngavavhoterwe go sleep on your bottle of whiskey.
Rubbish IBBO. Mugabe stole elections in 2008 rendering his rule unconstitutional. Did you raise a single finger on that. Why didn’t you make the same noise. High court said it was legal and if you want to to court and challenge the ruling.
Chitsike and Mandaza you were beneficiaries of the corrupt Mugabeism. Mugabe is gone for good. It is wishful thinking that Mugabe will one day be at State House. We will not allow him to go to Singapore for his routine medical checks because we have very “good” gvt health institutions. Mandaza and Chitsike you can continue daydreaming. Zviroto ngazviperere kuzviroto!
Mabvunzwa here?
