Make or break meeting for MDC leaders

Staff Reporter | Movement for Democratic Change, President Morgan Tsvangirai, came out in the public for the first time in a long while to meet his party supporters and leadership.
Factional fights threaten to tear apart the movement Tsvangirai leads, as attempts are made to block his deputy Thokozani Khupe from taking over the MDC Presidency in the ongoing succession battle. The crude attempt to sabotage Khupe constitutionally is to be done through a proposed second Vice President, a constitutional arrangement similar to Zanu PF’s.
Khupe has held fort while Tsvangirai has been away after being diagonised with colon cancer and undergoing treatment.
The MDC is at crossroads as it struggles with key structural issues to do with balance of power among its leadership ranks. In this vein, a meeting of the National Executive will see the party emerge stronger or weaker. Over the years the MDC has suffered internal strife as a result of factionalism leading to several splits which have left it weakened.
In terms of the current momentum, Tsvangirai is yet to make a public statement on his position concerning #flag Pastor Evan Mawarire, against whom incidentally the mobilisation of party structures today was done.
Not to be outdone by the popular Pastor according to Facebook posts by Charlton Hwende Tsvangirai’s right hand man, in our possession, Mawarire should be dismissed and the real ‘owners’ of the struggle continue. This received much public criticism from Zimbabweans who are tired of individualistic party politics that divide the opposition and give a very weakened Zanu PF an upper hand. MDC hardliners have for long refused to work with anyone else, whom they are quick to label agents of Zanu PF, yet at the same time even with huge numbers, failing to build the currency to remove Mugabe from power.
Tsvangirai has not distanced himself from the utterances of his influential leaders, who include Hwende. Many Zimbabweans pin their hopes on a united leadership as was the case when Apartheid South-Africa fell, the citizens there stood together as one. That mood of unity and euphoria returned to Zimbabweans yesterday, it remains to be seen if Tsvangirai is in or out.

  1. Tsvangirai failed to lead the revolution. He must step down. He had his chance, the people of Zimbabwe gave him their trust but he failed. Pres Mugabe and his machine was far ahead, always a step ahead of Tvangirais MDC. Step Down Tsvangirai give someone else a chance.

  3. There is nothing wrong in people standing up for their rights without being organized by a party. Nor does it mean that the parties are irrelevant.

  5. It doesn’t matter who he is. He has a point. What matters is what’s good for Zimbabwe.

  7. The fact that people are beginning to think this means something is wrong. The MDC must address this and come out in the open.

  8. You have a point Steve. Morgan has done a lot for Zimbabweans over the past 2 decades or so. The country needs regeneration and that can only happen with leadership change. The opposition is no exception and should also accept to change. We need to be carefull People of Zimbabwe. Let us rally behind a movement/ cause and not a person . At the moment our political parties are structured such that if the leader falls so does the movement they lead. This applies to both Zanu PF and most of the opposition parties too.
The MDC seems rattled by Pastor Evan why? Mukai Mukai maZimbabweans. We must not be bullied by any political party because they represent us. Zanu PF or MDC, we the ‘povo’ as they like to call us make these political parties. It’s our constitutional right to make our leaders present and future accountable.

  12. Struggle ya Save and Struggle ya Evan Mawarire is ONE COMMON GOAL of removing Dictatorship Mugabe. I have a lot of respect for Save, he achieved a lot. To compare the two is not worth it. Real Zimbabweans will never compare them as who is bigger than the other as this is not important. What is important is to remove Mugabe and his corrupt regime which not only Tsvangison and Evan are fighting for bust also you and me. Iwe neni tine basa rekususngura Zimbabwe.

  13. We do not want these opposition parties to come in and give the people’s struggles their name. No no no. The opposition for it to succeed must come together otherwise as there are they must forget everything. United we hold divided we fall.

  15. Its pple like you who through falsehoods try to simmer non existant tension between mdc & mawarire. The former is a political party while the later is an activist, so there is no competition for space but they rather compliment each other in the struggle.

  16. since 2013 I have been telling Zimbabwe that MDC is a failed movement under tsvangirai. Thisflag movement proves that change will not come through chinja MDC but through christian thinkers who are bold enough to take action. How many times have I asked tsvangirai to resign… but….. like Mugabe his mentor…. MT will not resign even though dear death’s door, weak and sick.
MT lay down your microphone, laptop, video recorder and smartphone. make way for another so MDC can revive itself. You are an amoral stumbling block to change
