Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa has openly cleared former Vice President Joice Mujuru, previously blamed for looting Chiadzwa diamonds.
Speaking in a wide ranging interview on the BBC Hard Talk, Chinamasa three times repeated his view that the missing $15billion diamond revenue matter has nothing to do with theft or fraud.
“This was all to do with the mis-pricing of our diamonds,” said Chinamasa.
He was at the time persuading his case to obtain aid and investment. “But you have got $15billion of revenue from the diamond industry which President Robert Mugabe himself said in March had been looted and simply disappeared..,” Chinamasa was asked.
He responded saying, “There is potential in our economy, no doubt, but I don’t think you are right to ascribe it to bad management. Its not the reason.
“We went through a revolution, the land issue was a revolution in itself…let me come to the $15billion, the $15 billion essentially what we are saying is over the years there has been an economic loss arising from trade mis-priscing.
“Now put it differently you would put it as looting but I would rather put it to say its mis-pricing , the problem we know happens in all developing countries – under invoicing of commodities over a period of time hence you can also put it to the fact that in that case, we were caught sleeping, but the truth of the matter is that its arising from mis-pricing and its an issue now we are interrogating with a view to coming up with the necessary systems to prevent that from happening (again),” he said.
The treasury boss’ comments came as Mujuru was fingered by ZANU PF Commissar Saviour Kasukuwere and professor Jonathan Moyo for looting Zimbabwe’s diamonds, participating in the so called $15billion theft.
Chinamasa was being grilled by the BBC’s Zeinab Badawi in London.

  1. But when others in the GNU wanted to ensure that transparent processes be collectively put in place it was the ZANU PF side that refused even the then Prime Minister to do fact finding appraisals as part of national duty for the people. Now you Chinamasa and your government are talking about underpricing. It simply boggles the mind and shows you why we don’t want you to lead us at all. You are incompetent. Period. You have made us poor. You are the real threat to national security.

  5. Of cause of you are trading under sanctions, you only get offers of your products prices and you do not determine it. The buyer will always point out the risks of dealing with someone under sanctions. Blame goes back to the same idiots, the MDCT which called for sanctions and their same Western sponsors who wanted us to remain under imperialist control.

  7. I certainly don’t buy that argument. It his way to sanitize their theft. Blame it on mispricing and the grand theft goes away as a huge embarassing farce, but the money will never be recovered. The truth in all what he says is that someone in the know underpriced for the nation and they got the difference as a $15 billion kick-back in an off-shore acount. I also doubt if it has anything to do with them being Shona or representing the Shona; just look at Obert Mpofu and Mpoko and tell me who they respresent.

  13. Pathetic a finance minister who cannot add up numbers. If he was taking a polygraphic test he should have failed dismally. The man was shaking and you could see there was fear in his eyes when he was questioned about Marujata’s PHD and the reason why the 92year old is still in power. ACCOUNTABILITY and RESPONSIBILITY was never mentioned throughput the conversation.
